I never heard of this and was a little flabbergasted so I went looking and read the original Mother Jones article from 2000 but then found this on reddit from last year. Seems weird that they've never made a formal aplogy but if this is all to be believed, it at least takes the sting off a bit:

@razorbunz I remember it back in 2000 being a gay kid in highschool. I personally won't be able to forgive them for giving any air what so ever to that nonsense no matter what a self serving reddit mod says.
@Redcarpet and that's absolutely your right. I hope i didn't appear to suggest otherwise. I can't imagine what that would've been like for you and I'm sorry.
Not that it matters, but I don't even know if I really "forgive" them...not sure that's something you forgive someone for. I guess maybe for me it doesn't define them currently?, but that comes from a place of privilege by way of not having been directly affected by it back then.
Anyway, didn't mean to defend them, just update info.
