One can find some very affordable post-war homes. They are very small by today’s standards but are plenty big enough.

One thing I like about ours is that it is all one level and is mostly handicapped accessible as is. With very little $ it can be made entirely so. We don’t need that right now, but down the road we might, and I want this to be our last home.

Many tiny houses would be difficult for anyone who developed a mobility issue.

But regardless...

Small is beautiful. 💜

Wipe the hard drive with a large magnet to remove your personal info (and everything else) and then ship it back?

@UnTied

Zoning ordinances often make tiny house living impossible. Generally, to live in a tiny house you have to find a county with no zoning ordinances, as very few places with zoning allow them.

Rather than tiny, we went small. Our house is less than half the size of the median sized home in the USA today. We were able to buy a home on land for a lot less than many condos, by going small.

Yeah, dad tried that too, to stretch our real milk. It was disgusting.

I remember being offered oatmeal drenched in such “milk”. It was nasty.

I was a little thing and was more ready to simply go on a hunger strike than to eat faux foods. My big brother was a bottomless pit teenager and likely the reason for the milk frugality.

Yes, my parents grew up during the Great Depression also. Nothing was wasted.

I suppose powdered skim milk was cheaper than regular milk back then, and I am sure that is why my dad thought we should switch from real milk to reconstituted skim milk. But I was a major stumbling block in his economic master plan. 😸

@CherNohio @CorreroM @yogapaddlerun

OMG. Powdered milk. Powdered SKIM milk. My Dad tried to make us drink it. I refused. It was vile. He tried to force the issue. I was persistently stubborn - it did not taste or smell fit for human consumption. I hadn’t thought about that in years. What a memory. Best repressed! 😱

@CorreroM

5 pounds of cheese is a lot of cheese, but if you are having to stretch food $ I suspect one finds many ways to eat it and work it into one’s diet. I am sure my neighbor managed to eat it up. That’s some good protein, calcium, etc to add to many meals.

Personally, I would eat a lot of omelets if I had a challenge to eat 5 pounds of cheese as frugally as possible. But then, I may be part 🐭

@stueytheround

Odd, I also got an error message when I tried to follow @NewJournalism21. I suppose it is a ghost of a deleted account?

@DrewExists

I think my day got off to a better start than yours! I hope your toddler didn’t swallow any of that stuff, and I hope there are no ill effects. That would definitely freak me out! 😱

@CorreroM

I remember government cheese. I had a disabled neighbor, an elderly black woman who used a walker. She mentioned that she wanted the cheese but was unable to go get it. I was young and able-bodied, so I went and stood in line for the cheese. I brought her a 5 pound box. She was very happy to have it.

@Autumn I both knit and crochet and I think the skills do cross over.

@Vikky @CorreroM

😸

Yes, eye bleach would be good about now. I cannot unsee that. Eep!

@UnTied . It blows my mind that he thinks that memories are so short and /or ppl are so stupid. Blows my mind further that he's right

@SteppinRazor

Yes. I ended up shutting off the Amber Alerts on my phone because they would wake me up.

What I want is to be awakened for imminent threats, like a tornado spotted in my area. I want it to wake me up to save my life.

What I don’t want is to be awakened for warnings issued for a storm that is expected to happen in 12+ hours. What I don’t want is to be awakened because a street in a city to the north is icy (yes, the NWS did that too).
