Don't be too alarmed. Bubonic Plague is actually quite common in wild populations. Jackrabbits, ground squirrels... that sort of thing. Obviously it's more serious when it enters domestic animal populations because of the proximity to humans but the infection is treated with antibiotics. The biggest problem is when folks think they just have a cold, and the infection goes too far before they seek treatment.
My cats hunt the field mice that find their way into this old farmhouse, especially in winter. I would never have thought one of my girls might have the plague - it would never even cross my mind.
I don’t think it is common here, fortunately. Hopefully the plague bacteria doesn’t become resistant to antibiotics like so many others have.
