Midwest windstorms likely

A band of strong to severe thunderstorms will blast from the Corn Belt through the greater Chicago area to Indiana on Monday evening, with gusts of 75 mph or greater possible. A derecho isn’t out of the question. MyRadar meteorologist Matthew Cappucci has an update.

A severe thunderstorm watch is up for northern PA and western/central New York until 7 p.m.

An "MCV", or "mesoscale convective vortex" – leftover swirl from yesterday's storms – is fostering convergence, or gathering air. More storms likely.

“Kink in the line” potentially tornadic circulation east of Buffalo and south of Rochester in western New York State.

The “rear flank downdraft,” or cool air wraparound on the south side of the circulation, could also contain 70 mph winds.

Storms in New York, Pennsylvania

Scattered strong to locally severe thunderstorms are bringing scattered damaging winds to parts of New York State and Pennsylvania. Some quarter-sized hail is possible too. MyRadar meteorologist Matthew Cappucci has a quick update

At about 4:45 AM on Monday morning, I was taking ominous backgrounds while chasing along the Texas Coastal Plain for
@MyRadar. Fallen trees had blocked other routes.

This driver (probably my age, maybe a touch younger) couldn’t see and drove off road. We got him home:

We have a warm front with backed (low-level easterly) winds along it AND a mesolow, or localized area of lower pressure/twist.

A few rotating supercells w/tornado risk possible.

Windows are getting boarded up in Playa del Carmen, Mexico as Hurricane Warnings have been issued. Landfall is expected early Friday morning along the east coast of the Yucatan.
