That watch may be extended later in eastern portions of the risk area.

The @NWS has issued a watch for east Texas,Louisiana, and the Mississippi River delta until 7 pm CST.

Potential threats will include Tornadoes (some potentially strong EF2+) and 2 inch hail.

Strong Tornadic Supercells Today

An episode of severe thunderstorms and possible tornadoes is expected across the Arklatex and lower Mississippi Valley today. Two types of storms will form — a windy squall line along the cold front with a few tornadoes, and then rotating supercells ahead of it with the risk of a couple of strong tornadoes.

Concerning signals in our high-resolution models depicting a number of rotation tracks along the Interstate 20 corridor this evening.

Note that rotating thunderstorms, including possible strong tornadic supercells, may continue well after dark. Nocturnal twisters = very bad.

As our low pressure system over Oklahoma "deepens," or strengthens, and pushes southeast, it will "breathe" warm, humid air north.

That warm sector is our slice of instability, or juice, within which strong/severe thunderstorms will erupt.

There will be two different "modes" of severe weather potential today.

The first will be a broken squall line along the cold front. Damaging straight-line winds and a few quick-hitting tornadoes.

But where discrete, rotating supercells form ahead of line, strong tornado risk.

Why are we talking a risk today across portions of the South?

Blame changing winds with height.

At the surface, SSE. Half a mile up, SSW. At the mid levels, SW, and aloft, WSW.

Storms that span multiple layers of atmosphere will rotate, brewing a tornado threat.

The warm sector of low pressure over Oklahoma is allowing a warm and humid air mass to overspread through Arklatex and will spread warmth to the Lower Mississippi Valley.

That’s fuel for tornadic storms as jet stream energy fosters increasing “shear,” or spin, this evening.
