π§ Lots of "albums for the moment" spinning in the studio these last few days. Midnight Oil's "Earth and Sun and Moon" is about as close to a concept album album as they ever got. Most of the songs read like a diary of a person coming to terms with their country's ever changing mood and landscape, for worse more than better. Feeling lost in a nation they no longer recognize and pining for simpler times, with less "stuff" and more nature.
π§ About an hour ago - I thought to myself, "self, you are really mega-pissed off right now, but you have work and family and a thousand things are happening at once and you need to f-u-c-k-i-n-g maintain....dude". so yeah, i have to stay chill for the people that rely on me. But then I remembered what I used to do when i was YOUNG and angry that always got me over the hill.
The Who's "Quadrophenia" is now challenging my studio monitors to a bare knuckle brawl.

An observation 1/2
Went to see BEAT last night. This is basically Belew/Levin half of the 80s King Crimson with Steve Vai and Danny Carey playing most of the 80s KC catalog. Now, when you hear about a KC show you automatically think its gonna be a crowd of guys between 40 and 80 years old seated quietly for two hours while the band plays. Let me say, wow.... The crowd was raucous and enthused throughout, giving five long standing ovations and REACTING to the band's musicianship.
π§ The Residents, "Demons Dance Alone". There have probably been more adjectives used to describe this "band" than any other. An acquired taste for sure. Conceptually there isn't any artist that comes close to what these guys have done. DDA was the Res' emotional response to 9/11, instead of reacting to the geo-political results, they made an album that reflects emotional responses after a "mechanized slaughter". It's one of their most listenable records.
π§ Dada, "Dada"
This LA band put out a string of powerful records in the 90s, ginned up by some of the tightest harmonies since a certain other southern cal band, and the ri-DONK-ulous guitar playing of Michael Gurley. Another band that really should have been famous, but I'm kind of glad they weren't. They didn't compromise, they kept the songs close to the heart, and the arrangements crisp. They didn't make a bad record. Long live Dada.
Finally arrived (been waiting weeks!!). Lady Mahalia. #cosomusic Still making my space βMY spaceβ.
Good morning all and Happy Saturday. #cosomusic prog-rock nerds may be interested to know that the mighty ECHOLYN is prepping a new album.
There's a new episode of the LET'S PLAY TEN podcast now available for your dining and dancing pleasure. Me and Ben discuss "seasonal listening syndrome", we close the book on the world's shiftiest promoter, and try out some metaphorical song reviews. As always, we've got great new indie rock to help you find your new favorite bands. LPT is on all the streamers or directly at https://40ficreations.com/letsplayten. Don't forget to SUPPORT THE ARTISTS!
π§ The Duke Spirit
I highly recommend every single album and song by this band.
That's it.
A few weeks back a local band went through the inevitable baptism by fire and got completely fucked over by a shady promoter. They recorded a song about it almost instantly. It's short and very very funny.
If any of the prog-metal musos are interested, new Dream Theater track marking the return of Mike Portnoy. Let the odd-meter shredding commence! #cosomusic

Better late than never, the new episode of my indie music podcast dropped yesterday. Me and Ben talk about our criteria for "favorite bands" and we tell a horrid tale of a small time promoter that grossly mistreated a band and got called out on his bs. As always, we've got ten brand new tracks from around the world to help you find your new favorite artists.

π§ Mad Honey, "Satellite Aphrodite" and "Discordia". Last year MH released a stellar record, from the top down it's just stunning. Today they released Discordia, which is a song by song deconstruction and "re-imagining" of the same tracks. I'm listening to the original songs followed by their new versions - which render the originals unrecognizable. It's a fun listening experience. Both albums stand alone, but mashed together it's a whirlwind. Trust me.
If you look real close, maybe squint a little, you can see us (40fi Creations, mothership for my podcast) mentioned in the liner notes for the new Molly Payton album "Yoyotta". That's a nice way to start a Tuesday.

π§ REO Speedwagon, "Live: You Get What You Play For".
Thanks to @Zevon I am rocking some old school midwestern rawk and roll today. Takes me waaaayyyyy back to the days when FM radio was actually pretty decent, and they had concert recordings on Sunday nights. I took a lot of ribbing for liking REO Speedwagon. I thought Richrath was one of the best rock guitarists out there, him and Cronin wrote a lot of really good songs, and they were fun!
5 new albums you should hear:
-Gia Ford, "Transparent Things"
-Honeyglaze, "Real Deal"
-Eleanor Kelly, "Another Red Scar"
-Hello Mary, "Emita Ox"
-Worlds Greatest Dad, "Better Luck Next Time"
π§ Honeyglaze, "Real Deal". The title says it all. Anouska Sokolow's lyrics are everything you want out of that cool songwriter chick that you love to hang with. "I'm underneath the table, I'm the bedsheets on your bed, I am in the front room where the DVDs are stacked". The trio's music is a lush guitar/bass/drums mesh with small accompaniments and bursts of post-punk aggression. This is really great British art-pop.
