October continues to rock. This mornings NMF playlist:

-Hannah Marks, "Outsider, Outlier"
-Daffo, "Pest EP"
-Pip Blom, "Bobbie"

Get yourself some!

Our own @Ms420 is in a band called Graves Hollow and their new album dropped today. Give it a tumble.

Here's what's in the playlist for today:

Mali Velasquez: "I'm Green"
Metric: "Formentera II"
CMAT: "Crazymad, For Me"
Margo Price, "Strays II"
Squirrel Flower, "Tomorrow's Fire"
Pinkshift, "suraksha EP"

Go check your release feeds and curated playlists - there's a mountain of new releases today! Something tells me we're all gonna need music this weekend.

I don't buy a lot of vinyl - when a great band like Pinkshift puts out something akin to a work of art - it's worth it, if anything to support the band. It will probably never even touch a turntable.

🎧 Various Artists, "Soul Love Now: The Black Fire Records Story, 1975-1993". Compilation of recordings from the very-independent Washington DC based label, founded by Howard Uni DJ Jimmy "Black Fire" Gray and local musician James Branch. There's a great NYT article linked below (no paywall) about the album and the label. One of my favorite collections. It's available on Bandcamp.

Happy Friday everyone! The release feed is bubbling over with goodness. New stuff for my morning playlist:

-Georgia Gets By, "Fish Bird Baby Boy EP"
-Tele Novella, "Poet's Tooth"
-Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, "I Love You"

Remember that today is a bandcamp friday and all sales proceeds go to the artists.

Get yourself some fresh music and rock into the weekend. Cheers.

Just dropped an over-stuffed episode of the Lets Play Ten podcast. You get EIGHTEEN brand new indie rock tracks, FOUR tracks from our "plus one" bucket, and TWO bonus tracks. That's 24 songs - so you're bound to find a new favorite band. Me and Ben give you all the info you need and the usual silliness ensues. Please give us a listen on your streamer of choice or at 40ficreations.com/letsplayten. You can find links to all the songs in the episode description. Cheers and thanks!!

🎧 Equal Creatures, "Prey Animal EP". Excellent indie rock from Atlanta GA. Their bass player is the offspring of our fellow cosonaut @WuzzaDiva

I love the snakey guitar lines here and the way the band changes up the feels throughout the songs. Full album is in the works and really looking forward to it. "Pills In My Hand" is a slow-burner that just explodes into a cinematic epic. The songs address some pretty heady issues. Give it a listen.

🎧 Black Country New Road, "Live at Queen Elizabeth Hall". Bonus material from the deluxe version of their 2022 Ants From Up There album. This show was recorded in 2021 when Isaac Wood was still with them. If I am going to turn into a zombie in less than an hour (so the online experts predict), I want this band to be my final lucid memory. God bless BCNR.

🎧 Rush, "Red Stars (Playlist)". I'm a big music nerd and RUSH was my introduction into the world of prog. All the guys I hung out with in HS were into them and I just didn't get it. Then one of the older guys played Moving Pictures for me and it just clicked. I'm rocking a playlist of mostly "latter day" tracks from the post 80's era. I miss the "boys" very much.

I made the mistake a few months ago to start sub-cataloguing my music library using custom genres.

I am now in a very deep cave with no way out. My food is running out and my leg is wedged underneath a very heavy rock.

Let's call it "Embarrassment of Riches Friday". New albums from:

Cleo Sol, "Gold" (Her second drop in two weeks!)

Steven Wilson, "The Harmony Codex"

Hana Eid, "Pitbull" (single)

Pacifica, "Freak Scene" (single)

Ali Shaheed Muhammed/Adrian Younge, "Jazz Is Dead 020/Instumentals"

Check your release feeds and playlists - it's a stellar day!

🎧 The Rolling Stones, "Between the Buttons (UK)". Full disclosure, not a Stones fan. Deep respect, of course, and acknowledgement of their gigantic contribution, but never my cuppa. I think Keef is a shit guitarist, and Mick has zero emotional depth as a singer, but hey he's got moves like...himself. Bill Wyman just plain sucked. Every so often I need to hear or see something to re-educate or remind myself why I hold a particular opinion on it. I never got the Stones.

🎧 Allison Russell, "The Returner". After seeing her incendiary set at Farm Aid, I dug in to her catalog. She's been around a long time, first as a member of Po' Girl and Birds of Chicago. Her solo albums should be required listening not just for the music, but for the context. Her early life story is heartbreaking - abused by her white-supremacist step-father, she left home at 15. She tells her story thru her songs, and I've linked an interview below.

Okay y’all, I am off to Farm-Aid. If I die of boredom, tell my children I loved them very much.

🎧 Daffo, "Poor Madeline". Once in a very great while, a song reaches into my chest and squeezes my heart until I can actually feel the trauma that inspired it. This is one of those rare occasions. Holy shit.

🎧 A delightful to all the naughties!

Getting things started with these two.

Sincere Engineer - "Cheap Grills"
Bleach Lab - "Lost in a Rush of Emptiness

Hope your day is filled with music and/or whatever brings you joy. Cheers, all!

🎧 Small Faces, "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake". The greatly undervalued 1968 semi-concept album from the "other" British Mod band. Traversing an all-sorts of musical styles, it is an undeniably British pop record. The entire second side is a suite about "Stan" looking for the lost half the moon. What a fun listen. The mono recording is highly recommended, it just hits harder.

In the car this AM with 14, listening to the Beatles channel. Outloud, I started improvising a scene where Paul McC was still showing up at Peter Asher's old house asking the current tenants if he could use the piano. And the current tenants reluctantly let him in, gave him tea, and got on with their day. 14 says "dad you should write for tv". In 6 words, he reminded me of a long forgotten, unrealized dream of mine.

Fucking kids.

We just released a new episode of the LETS PLAY TEN podcast. We've got ten brand new indie rock/punk/alt tracks and the most directionless conversation we've ever had. Silliness reigns. Check it out and find your new favorite band! LPT is on all the streamers and at 40ficreations.com/letsplayten
