🎧 Down With The Stereotype, "On The Lilac River". Are they prog, psych, indie, alt? It doesn't matter because genres are oppressive. DWTS is just a kick ass young British band embracing their love of riff-driven, thoughtful rock and fucking roll. They have their mushy side, sure. This self-produced album is one of the most complete debut records I've ever heard. Stellar musicianship all around, and never over-indulgent.
FWIW, here's my top ten albums for 2023:
-BCNR, Live at Bush Hall
-Allison Russell, The Returner
-Billy Nomates, Cacti
-Cherry Glazerr, I Don't Want You Anymore
-Empty Country, Empty Country II
-ill peach, This Is Not An Exit
-Mali Velasquez, I'm Green
-Old Soul, Education on Earth
-Ruby Archer, Oh So Tender
-Tape Runs Out, Floodhead
Top Five Singles:
-Empris, Cherry Milk
-Plantoid, Dogs Life
-City Ghost, good news
-Picture Parlor, Norwegian Wood
-Sonder Bombs, The Star
🎧 Rush, "Hemispheres". This was never a favorite RUSH album for me. The main side long track always seemed very forced and awkward to me - the lyrics didn't flow IMO. "2112" was a little naive, but it was a statement piece. "Hemispheres" was just arrogant. The second side is untouchable, though, containing some of the best music they created in the pre-Moving Pictures era. I haven't listened to this record in probably 30 years. It's time.
I don't usually make top ten lists. But when I do....man, is it a pain in the ass. #cosomusic

Hey if you're looking for something cool to get for Bandcamp Friday - check this out
https://somethingmerry.bandcamp.com/album/side-one-track-one-a-tribute-to-album-openers
It's a new benefit compilation of really cool indie bands covering album opening songs from a lot of very familiar artists. All proceeds go to Sandy Hook Promise. Pay any price (I gave 20 bucks).
🎧 Bessie Turner, "Themed Nights EP" and "arrabbiata EP". I can't take credit for "stumbling across" this artist - my son's BFF is as much of a music nerd as I am and sent me this artist. Really good UK "progressive-pop" (is that a thing?). Bessie will remind you of other artists but you won't be able to pinpoint which ones. Good music for a Friday morning. It's on all your streamers.
🎧 Try The Pie, "A Widening Burst of Forever". If you were into artists like Belly or Juliana Hatfield, give this one a spin. Bean Tupou mixes her Tongan background with bay area punk and creates very accessible (and beautiful) indie rock. Good stuff.

There was so much incredible music released at the end of this month, we had to squeeze in another episode ahead of schedule. So we just dropped E26 of the Lets Play Ten podcast, with ten brand spanking new indie rock tracks from artists you probably haven't heard of. This eps playlist is really phenomenal. If you hear something you dig, please support the artists with a merch or music purchase. As always, my thanks!
🎧 Ruby Archer, "Oh So Tender". Posting without comment. Just listen to it. Trust me.

Okay - my 3.5 hours of mtgs are over and i have just enough time to spin the new Madness LP, "C'est La Vie"
14: (singing “Good Kush and Alcohol”)
Me: Lil Wayne…
14: Dad you know that song?
Me: Yeah. I know Lil Wayne. He aint no Chuck D.
14: Who’s Chuck D?
Long story short we have a room for rent.

If uncategorizeable avant garde music (with overtones of metal, folk, jazz, and classical) is your thing - read on. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum is readying their long gestating 4th album, and bonus, it's the first release on my good friend's brand new imprint Avant Night records. All the details on the album, pre-order info, and a pre-release track are here: https://www.brooklynvegan.com/sleepytime-gorilla-museum-announce-first-album-in-17-years-stream-a-track/
Hey listen, I LOVE me some Dolly Parton. She is awesome on so many levels. I'm listening to the pre-release tracks from her Rock Star album and.....ummm.....gaaaaahhh. Just a little cringey. #cosomusic
🎧 hey, nothing, "We're Starting To Look Like Each Other". ATL high school pals Tyler Mabry and Harlow Phillips have just released their debut album, and it sets a pretty high bar. Is it rock-folk? Indie? Alt-Emo? "Low Spirited Funeral" and "Ur Purple Eyes" address those questions, and lay out what we can expect from them in the future. The latter is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in years. I've been "living in" this record for a few days.

New singles from Push Rope and Yucky Bangs, and the pre-release of the Tali & the Arms EP.
Still hunting....

Good morning and Happy Bandcamp Friday! The first Friday of every month (like today), https://bandcamp.com. waives its fees and every penny goes to the artists. It's like the world's largest indie record shop, you can buy digital, vinyl, and merch directly from the artists or their labels. Go git yerself some new music and support indie musicians (they need to eat too).
🎧 Emily Wolfe, “The Blowback”. This album just plain kicks ass from beginning to end. No filler. Monster guitars, bass and drums, hooks for days. When it gets bluesy, its “moist” as fuck. I love what this artist is doing. And that voice. God damn.

There's a new episode of my indie music podcast "Lets Play Ten" in the ether. As always we've got 10 new indie/DIY tracks, a pair of "older" songs, bonus content, and the usual "witty" banter. If you're looking for new music and you like the rock and roll, please give us a tumble on your favorite streaming service or at https://40ficreations.com/letsplayten. And as always, we thank you for your patronage. Don't forget to support our artists by purchasing music and merch!
The new Beatles song sounds more like a Lennon solo song to me. It doesn't have that "Beatle-ness" that Free as a Bird and Real Love had. Ringo's drums don't have that presence they used to have, that "wallop" is buried. Good song though. #cosomusic
🎧 Hannah Marks, “Outsider, Outlier”. HM is the real deal. An accomplished jazz bassist, music educator and lecturer. So much to unpack here. Its not jazz, its not pop or rock. But she peppers her songs with elements of avant-rock, skronk, and free jazz, employing Kate Bush-like vocal acrobatics. The opening track is a thunderous post-punk treatise on 90s music-scene gender politics, and then its off into some jazzier-fusion territory. Go get it.
