🎧 Parliament, “The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein”. As the euphoria of America’s bicentennial summer gave way to the mega-downer of our first post-Nixon election, George Clinton, Bernie Worrell and Bootsy steered the mothership collective into this very “horny” groovefest. Coming off “Mothership Connection” its a slight step down but still funky and fun as hell. Production is a little smoother especially on the brass, and Bootsy’s lines are slinky as ever. Do that stuff, indeed.

Well, I can cross Parliament Funkadelic off the live bucket list, courtesy of my 19yo. There's nothing better on a sweltering summer night than some serious funk. It's all over me.

🎧 Margaret Glaspy, "Echo the Diamond." After a foray into more electronic art-pop territory, Glaspy has packed away her "Maschine" and gone back to her guitar, and produced a terrific set of alt-rock. Hey - any artist that starts a song with the lyric "don't be a dick" has got my attention. But she already had it. Her debut album "Emotions and Math" is stellar as well.

🎧 oldsoul, "Education on Earth". FINALLY a new album from oldsoul!! When the lockdown started I was starved for new music and started looking in the deep dark recesses for anything interesting and new. oldsoul was one of the bands that stood out. Jess Hall's vocals and lyrics just shook me. They've made some changes, updated the sound a little, they still sound great and the new songs are killer. Always a good day when a favorite band drops new stuff!

Our undying thanks!

🎧 Janelle Monae, "The ArchAndroid". Working my way thru JM's catalog, and making amends to the music gods (they are so unforgiving). This record came out 13 years ago and it's STILL ahead of its time.

We watched the live stream of the “Outside Lands” music festival last night. I always thought Janelle Monae was a garden variety r&b artist. Now kicking myself for not checking her out all these years. Her set was fire. Her songs are immediate and urgent and personal. Her live band is monster. She performs the shit out of her songs. I am very much a fan. Seeing her in person just made the bucket list. . Outside Lands is on Amazon Prime.

🎧 Porcupine Tree, “Signify”. This was the first PT album I ever heard, back in 97 just after it came out. I couldn’t believe music this good still existed, especially when good prog had become barren. Steven Wilson re-framed the genre, adding just enough heart to keep it from sounding cold and distant. And the musicianship, damn. A great jumping on point if you’re unfamiliar. The titular instrumental, “Sever”, “Sleep…”, “Waiting” are all great tracks. Dig in.

🎧 Joiner, "Hydrangea EP". Just dropped this morning. Above-bar melancholy indie rock with gorgeous verses and arena ready choruses.

A couple of new EPs dropped this morning and I am all up in them (or maybe they are all up in me)...

Goo, "Chomp"
buffchick, "Here Forever"

Whoever produces those shitty “Rock Legends” docs for AXS-TV needs a fact checker. There’s really zero excuse for stupid narration mistakes like “Benefit was the second Jethro Tull album” (nope) or “Aqualung was a double album” (nah). Thanks for coming to my first world problem talk.

🎧 Black Market Brass, "Undying Thirst". Faithful-to-a-point Afrobeat/Afrojazz from this huge Minneapolis ensemble. While paying homage to the godfathers of the genre, including but not exclusively recording live to tape, there are some psych-rock elements laid throughout the songs that come as unexpected, but aren't so shocking that they make you forget what this band is really all about. This is very, very good.

🎧 Robbie Robertson, "How to Become Clairvoyant". Robbie's 2011 release. A more rollicking album, though not exactly rocking, than his previous solo records. Lots of big names guesting, and some of his better post-Band songs.

🎧 The Band, “The Band”. Another musical hero heads off to the big after party. Thanks for all those great songs, Robbie, “I think they got it now….”

🎧 Mahalia Jackson, "Make A Joyful Noise Unto the Lord". The original MJ refused Columbia Records attempts to make her repertoire palpable to white people, instead convincing white people to hear her gospel and leaving them wanting more. There is something about this particular 1963 album, the way the choir is split in the stereo spread to truly surround you, the piano hits a little harder, it just all comes together perfectly. Great selection of songs too. All Hail Mahalia.

🎧 David Sylvian and Robert Fripp, "Damage". Live recording of this unlikely and short lived collaboration. Fripp and Sylvian took Trey Gunn, Pat Mastelotto, and "infinite guitarist" Michael Brook out for a series of shows in 1993, showcasing the funkier aggro rock of the sole studio album they did, a JAPAN song, and some of Sylvians solo material. You can hear bubbles of what would be the future King Crimson in here, as 3/5 of this band would end up in the 90's era KC.

🎧 The Pearl Harts, "Love, Chaos". Starting off a meeting-free day with some good old "'tude-rock" from this UK duo. If The Beaches jammed with L7 it might sound like this. But maybe not. In any case it's excellent head-nodding grrrl rock, ear-catching riffs, sweaty rhythms, and a just this side of sleek production. Bitchen' harmonies too.

🎧 Shpongle, "Ineffable Mysteries From Shpongleland". In 2011 I had major surgery on my shoulder. I was sent home with a codeine drip and told to sleep sitting up so as not to aggravate the repair. I can't sleep sitting up. But I was also zonked out 24/7 for a week. I needed music for sleepless codeine nights, so I googled "music for codeine haze" or something like that and one of the results was Shpongle, the trippy EDM project of Simon Posford and Raja Ram. So..that.
