Unless another disaster befalls us in the next half hour - we are FINALLY recording EP18 of the "Let's Play Ten" indie music podcast tonight. We've cancelled this recording multiple times due to tornado-wrecked cars, storms, power outages, illness, and long vacations. Why am I telling you this? Because this episode is going to be FIRE - we're so excited about our super-sized double length playlist! Episode drops on Thursday.

Making a list of the things I would have given up to have been there just for this song.

Blur - Parklife (w/Phil Daniels)

🎧 Shadeland, "The Swimmers of Lake Baikal". Shadeland are a local Indianapolis band so full disclosure I know these guys. I guess I'd classify them as hard art rock, with a dash of prog. The songs are peppered with gigantic arena-ready moments. Their drummer is one of the best I've ever heard/seen.This is their new album (released yesterday), and seems to be a concept record inspired on the world's largest fresh water lake.

🎧 YES, "Going For The One". Chris Squire passed 8 years ago today. Countless bass players, myself included, studied his work as part of our "onboarding". His unique and melodic bass lines, his carefully crafted tone, and his effortless joy for the instrument made him a major influence on me. GFTO is my favorite YES album. From the propulsive rock of the title track to the epic majesty of "Awaken", this is one of Chris' finest hours.

🎧 Grandaddy, "The Sophtware Slump". It's June of 2000. My gf and I are in the midst of planning our wedding and we need a break. We took a late night drive to Greenwich Village and ended up at Tower Recs. She said "we need something fresh, something we don't know anything about...this looks cool." From the lo-fi opening of "He's Simple..." we were hooked. How ironic that we didn't get to see them live until we moved back to Indy a few years later.

🎧 Rose Royce, "In Full Bloom". Rose Royce was assembled by producer Norman Whitfield, who was looking to go out on his own after years at Motown. After the band hit it big with the Car Wash soundtrack, they recorded this outstanding follow up. Free from the narratives of a film, the band stretched out, with funkier and more Studio 54 ready jams. It's an all-sorts of 70's funk, r&b, soul, and shimmery disco. Love it.

🎧 Corvair, "Bound To Be". Indie rock for the generation that defined it. Veterans of the Portland scene Heather Larimer (Ex Autres) and Brian Naubert (Ruston Mire) return on the follow up to their 2021 debut, with Posie's drummer Mike Musburger on board. Good stuff, a solid release, and a great "let's start the weekend" spin.

🎧 The Beaches πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ , "Late Show". @mrk posted about their new single a few days ago and it reminded my how much I FUCKING LOVE their first full length album from 2017. It's dirtier, grittier, and sexier than their most recent output - which doesn't mean I don't like the new stuff. Produced by Emily and Jimmy from Metric (bonus!). Every song is a drunken party-ready banger.

🎧 Pink Floyd, "The Man and The Journey". Complete recording of the 17 Sept 69 Amsterdam performance of PF's "Massed Gadgets of Auximenes" tour. One of my favorite PF recordings. They were building the bridge to works like "Atom Heart Mother" and "Meddle", having moved on from psychedelia and into art-film soundtracks. Their albums from this period are a little raggedy, but this performance is near perfect '69 Floyd. Its on disc 2 of the linked album.

🎧 Pink Floyd, "A Saucerful of Secrets". After seeing the Hipgnosis doc I have a little Pink Floyd fever. This was Hipgnosis' first ever album cover design for their old friends in PF, and the story of how it was created is almost as interesting as the music within. PF is finding it's footing in the post-Syd world on this album, with Gilmour figuring out his place and the band stretching out in a representation of what their live show sounded like in 68

I saw a documentary last night about Hipgnosis (the folks who brought you some of the most iconic album covers of the 70s) last night. It's expectedly arty and beautifully made. Lots of interviews with Pink Floyd, Macca, Peter Gabriel, Zeppelin, and others. Surviving founder Po Powell and associates tell some sweet and stark tales about the creation of those iconic images. Its called "Squaring the Circle" and it's at an art house theatre near you.

🎧 Bleach Garden, "Nepenthe". If you dug STP/Velvet Revolver, this album will bring you right back those halcyon days of post-grunge, when the dust settled and all those bands started splintering into ego-driven side projects that sounded pretty much like their old bands 🀣

Since I relate everything to music, I was trying to think of an appropriate soundtrack to this circus going on in Miami. I immediately thought of "Faerie's Aire and Death Waltz", a composition that parodies composition. Here's a pic of the sheet music, a link to a blog by the composer's nephew about the piece, and a link to a video of a small troupe attempting a performance (starts at 3:49). Laugh and enjoy!

🎧 The Aces, β€œI’ve Loved You For So Long”. Did The Aces just drop THE album of the summer??
Flawless top-down ready pop.

Five artists I heard for the first time this week and can't enough of:

1. Alex Lahey
2. Ratboys
3. Goo
4. The Cordial Sins
5. Joy Oladokun

🎧 Ratboys, "Black Earth, WI". A sprawling 8 1/2 minute epic single from Chicago's Ratboys. This approaches "Hey Jude" level gorgeousness with a killer sing-a-long before returning to earth. Beautiful lyrics/imagery. Love this one.
