🎧 Year of October, "Keep On Fighting". A smoldering stoner rock epic, with volcanic down-tuned riffs topped off by prowling, serpentining vocals. Light up or don't, but play it loud.

🎧 Mark Ortwein, "Stretching Boundaries". "Pops" is a personal friend. He''s the principal bassoon for the Indianapolis SO, he's done sessions for everyone from local punk bands to Disney. He's the real deal. He has followed up his 2021 jazz record with this take on classical music. These are beautiful compositions, with MO's bassoon and sax out front, and a sextet rounding out the mix.

🎧 Outerloop, (s/t). Stumbled across this band last night. From Washington DC. Take the bombast and bravado of early nineties Seattle, the thinking persons prog metal of KingsX, add crystalline vocals spewing out lyrics in anger and urgency, and you might have Outerloop. If you like your hard rock full of killer arpeggios and slammin drums, check this one out.

🎧 Tears For Fears, "The Seeds of Love". A long time favorite of mine. TFF ditched so much of what made them famous in favor of a more organic sound, and the resulting struggle to make this record effectively ended the Orzabal/Smith partnership for ten years. IMO it's among the 80's most perfect records, in part because it isn't afraid to show its debt to the 60's. And damn...Oleta Adams.

There's a new episode of Lets Play Ten up now. Ben and I talk about how we approach gender identity in music and how slippery the slope has become. As always we've got 10 great new indie/DIY tracks for you and we know you'll love them. Give us a listen and subscribe at 40ficreations.com/letsplayten or on your favorite streaming svc (we're on all of them). Thanks in advance!

🎧 Hannah Flora, "Hate Sex". I am seriously obsessed with this song and this artist. Without the usual hyperbole, this song will absolutely wreck you.

Hey it's new music release day! What do you got for me, CoSo?

🎧 Perfect Beings, "Vier". Thanks to @codeWhisperer for the recco! Loving this very proggy 2018 release. I'm getting hints of neo-prog bands like Flower Kings and Airbag. What puts this record over the top for me is the generous use of non-rock instruments to bring the pieces together. This is one of those sprawling prog albums that you get lost in. A fantastic voyage indeed.

I listen to a lot of weird shit. I'm no prude when it comes to music. I give everything a fair listen. This is my annual re-statement that Captain Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica" is unlistenable crap.

🎧 Dream Theater, "A View From The Top Of The World". I was a DT superfan for many years, from the time I saw them open for Marillion in 1989. They lost me at "The Astonishing", the worst concept album ever. So I haven't really been paying attention. This 2021 release sounds pretty much like every DT album since "Dramatic Turn of Events". Predictable and non-imaginative.

🎧 Caught up on several recently released albums this weekend. Chances are you''ll dig at least one of these.

Blondshell, S/T
Wednesday, "Rat Saw Dog"
Annabel Lee, "Mother's Hammer"
dust, "Etcetera, etc.""

Hope you check them out and enjoy as much as I did!

Another piece goes into the museum. 10 years, 200 internet radio shows/podcasts/live remotes, hundreds of recording projects, it served me very well.

🎧 Pynch, "Howling At A Concrete Moon". An album about "what its like to be young and English at this moment in time". Brilliant new brit-pop from a great new band. A breezy travelogue thru London. IMO this might be the next great British pop record.

"Success, Fame, and Cleared Eyed Cynicism" is the name of the newest episode of my indie music podcast Let's Play Ten. We're particularly proud of this episode's playlist, a little punk, a little post-rock, a little urban narrative, healthy doses of solid rock and roll. You can find LPT on any streaming service or directly at 40ficreations.com/letsplayten

Thank you for listening and please support our artists!

🎧 A Certain Ratio, "1982". Grazing their fifth decade, ACR laid the groundwork for a boatload of imitators. Channeling dance beats and funk, with injections of sweat mopped off Manchester dance halls, this new album is both a throwback to it's titular year and a nod to the band's disciples (LCD Soundsystem anyone?). It's better when it's funkier, but occasional forays into disco don't spoil the party.

Hey everybody today is Bandcamp Friday, which means that 100% of sales goes to the artists. If you haven't checked out Bandcamp - it's like a virtual indie record store, and you can download your purchases right from the sight.

🎧 Crown Lands, "Fearless". So....if you like "2112" era RUSH, this album is definitely in your wheelhouse. 'Nuff said.

🎧 Michael Nesmith & The First National Band, "Nevada Fighter". On EP13 of the "Let's Play Ten" podcast I briefly mentioned that Nez' 1NB records are country music so therefore I don't dismiss all of the genre out of hand. Indeed, this is a great batch of songs, with the legendary Red Rhodes on pedal steel, and Nez moving deeper into "cosmic American music", recorded just as the band was running out of steam (the second side is all covers).

🎧 Black Country New Road, "Live at Bush Hall". Released today. BCNR is going thru some stuff. Just before releasing a highly anticipated soph album their de facto leader dropped out. Now, they have re-grouped and recorded an entire albums worth of new music live. A bold move. I'm not sure I am loving BCNR Mach 2, a lot of the tension that made the first album so endearing has been wiped. But, the music is still adventurous and quite thrilling.

🎧 King Crimson, "Larks Tongues In Aspic". I would be remiss if I didn't spin this one on it's 50th anniversary. Hands down my favorite KC record. The first with the Bruford/Wetton/Cross band and the only one with Jamie Muir. Their most unhinged and complex record, veering in multiple directions all at once, with the rhythm section untethered and free to explore. The title track wraps moments of controlled chaos around blasts of sheer madness.
