🎧 The Clash, "Combat Rock - The People's Hall". I usually don't go in for re-masters (I think they are mostly a money grab and don't enhance the listening experience). Combat Rock is a BIG record for me. I saw them open for The Who at the ridiculous Shea Stadium show in 1982. The Who were anemic, but The Clash, in their battle fatigues (and battling fatigue) played like they were in a small club (that's my memory anyway). Long live The Clash.

Drives me bonkers when the media links stuff like this to the POTUS approval rating. Of course a vast majority of the party thinks we are heading in the wrong direction, because we read the fucking news. And yeah we think the economy is bad, because inflation is hurting us. We don't THINK these things, we KNOW these things because we are paying attention. But I'm not blaming the admin for that stuff. Should I be?

🎧 Gabi Garbutt, "Cockerel". New release from London-based indie-pop artist. Air-brushed with just a dusting of ska horns, think Paul Weller hanging out with Jenny Lewis. Superb upbeat guitar based pop with twisting lyrics. "Here we are again travailing the arteries of innocence." Nice.

🎧 Mavis Staples & Levon Helm, “Carry Me Home”. Recorded at one of Helm’s famous Midnight Rambles in 2011. Levon (who doesn’t sing much here due to his illness) and Mavis (who is in her element and raises the roof) put on a sermon that is joyous and timeless. Try NOT to move some part of your body during “Hand Writing on the Wall”. Recording sounds fantastic, you’re in the room.

🎧 The Dear Hunter, "Act V: Hymns With The Devil in Confession". Casey Crescenzo's ever evolving prog-emo magnum opus. Will we EVER get Part VI?? Exciting and complex, but never cold or unemotional.

With apologies to the deathcore, grindcore, and djent aficionados here, no offense intended.

“Wanna go to a music festival?”
“Who’s playing?”
“Gross Load”
“Who else”
“…………uhhhhhh”

🎧 The Joy Formidable, "Into The Blue". One of the bands that makes me wish I was Welsh.

🎧 Shpongle, "Ineffable Mysteries..." I had ACL surgery many years ago and had a codeine drip for about a week for the post-op pain. Between the discomfort of trying to sleep sitting upright and the drugs, I couldn't sleep at all the first night. I searched "music for codeine" and Shpongle came up. Sooooo trippy.

🎧 The Anderson Council, "Worlds Collide". Psychedelic pop and roll. Delicious.

🎧 Rosie Tucker, "Sucker Supreme". Rosie is an awesome indie rock artist from LA. Their songs are full of sharp witty lyrics and hummable melodies. Great songwriting. One of my favorite albums from 2021. Check them out!

Humble brag alert (apologies):
Just got back from my kids senior awards night. We are pretty hands off when it comes to our kiddos grades. They do well without any help from us, but we assist when asked or when we need to. We aren’t helicopter parents when it comes to grades. I guess we r doing something right. AP Scholar, National Honor Society, 4.4 GPA at the #4 high school in the state. Beaming with pride. And he did it all. Pic is of his “Honor Roll Stole”.

🎧 Bonobo, "Days To Come". Great album overall but the tracks with vocals by Bajka are stand-outs. "Well we can't change the world / But we can change the way we live"

🎧 Poster Children, "Grand Bargain".

"Kleptocracy
Rule by thieves
To use the mechanism of government
To enrich oneself
At the expense of the greater good".

🎧 Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, “Pretty Good For A Girl Band”. I make no apologies about my affinity for the new wave of pop-punk. I can’t just settle into the music that I am “supposed to” listen to at my age. I need my rock and roll. RIYL: The Gully Boys, Vial, The Beaches.

🎧 "Sacred Soul: D-Vine Spirituals Records Story Volume One". Awesome compilation of the obscure gospel label. Recordings produced by Juan Shipp at Tempo Studio in Memphis captured traveling gospel vocal groups backed by a soulful house band. Truly enlightening.

🎧 Gabi Garbutt, “The Discredited Language of Angels”. Very danceable guitar pop with a West London twist and punctuating horns. Greatly looking forward to her forthcoming LP.

Current listen: Billy Cobham, "Total Eclipse". If Cobham was standing in a room with his hands in his pockets merely "thinking" about music, he would have my undivided attention.

And just like that its over. I still haven't processed that my first child is out the door in 10 weeks. As i watched our slide show unfold throughout yesterdays grad party, i would see images of my baby boy dissolve into images of this full grown person, a man in progress. I still have two more children behind him but i know how fast time really goes. I don't post pics of my kids on social so this is the best visual metaphor i can think of for my emotions today.

It’s my eldest’s grad party today 😔 which means my amazing wife gets to rock a charcuterie table. This is stage 1. (Cheese and Meat tray pending..)
