I've had breakfast and I need to edit for myself and for a client today. The big three kids are home tonight, tomorrow is a day off, Monday we start the race towards the airport and somehow we are going to survive all of this.

Things should be calmer by late July.

Incheon Airport has excellent restaurants, fabulous shopping, multiple playgrounds, a museum, and generally feels like a very posh mall that also, almost accidentally, has planes.

Showing up an hour or two early is not a problem. You can go shopping and have a nice sit-down meal.

"It's only 90 minutes to the airport so-"

*me panic-tackling the neighbor*

In Seoul??? On a Saturday???? NO!!!!

There's a reason someone is starting a helicopter taxi between Seoul and Incheon airport. From central Seoul, in good traffic, it's still over an hour.

We never have good traffic.

It fills me with a sense of awe, at all the complex and enormous things happening in space, time, and matter, that we never see, that happened millions or billions of years before we were a glint in the ocean's eye.

"I do not want to have potatoes tonight. Or soup. Or rice."

Not the request I was expecting and it does limit my repertoire. Also, it means chicken and creamy leeks is out for dinner. Maybe pizza?

Petty Hill I Will Die (or kill) On:

If you have six guests at a panel and 5 are He/Him and one is They/Them, you still did not have women on the panel.

If four are He/Him and one is They/Them and one is She/Her, you still aren't inclusive and aren't doing this well.

@LianaBrooks Last interesting thing:

This is my "fossil rock" on display at the Charleston Museum. It's an example of a xenolith ("foreign stone"), where a piece of one kind of rock is found embedded in a different kind.

Here, a quratzite pebble (igneous) is found embedded in marine silt, a marl (sedimentary), telling a story that took millions of years to write. This washed down from the mountains, got tumbled in a stream, caught in tree roots (?), then washed out to sea, 100 miles offshore.

@LianaBrooks Other interesting thing:

You've heard the expression "queer as a three dollar bill"? Well, here's a three CENT bill, issued by the U.S. Treasury during the Civil War. Such fractional currency was issued from 1862 to 1872 due to a shortage of coins because people were hoarding them. The bills were issued in denominations of 3, 5, 10, 25, and 50 cents. The 3¢ note was issued starting in 1863. I found this in an old family Bible at Goodwill last year. I sold it for $28.

@LianaBrooks New BFF then launches into a 7 hour lecture about the joys of belly button lint. 😉😛

Here's an interesting thing for you:

The largest flying bird of all time (i.e., living or extinct) is Pelagornis sandersi. It stood about 5 feet tall, with an estimated 24 foot wingspan, and weighed about 80 lbs.. This bird soared over the Atlantic continental shelf 26 million years ago. I found this beast in 1983. This is the Charleston Museum's display. 👇

Person: I am very well educated on this fascinating niche thing that no one wants to hear about.

Me: Hit me with it. I love a good recreational lecture.

New Best Friend: Seriously?

Me: Seriously. Talk all night.

BFF: So here's what my thesis project was on!!!!

Without fail all my friends are the most amazing humans who are utterly inspirational, focused, educated, and just the best human beings in the world. I'm the little book gremlin that somehow snuck into the party and got away with it because I pick up information as a hobby at this point? I guess?

... after the editing, parenting, and errands I will also probably try to write a page on the current WIP and practice Spanish and Korean before showering and going to bed. And tomorrow will be more like this, only busier because the older three are flying home from Japan.

It's 2pm and I've run out of all ambition. Do I want a nap or an ice cream sundae?

Keep in mind, I have at least two more Leave The House errands to run, I'm teaching Youngest how to cook tacos around 5, and I need to put notes into another 50 pages of a book edit today. So...

If you are writing contemporary fiction please keep in mind that 1) the popular name changes over the decades and 2) different countries have different names.

Do your research and make sure that the names you use work for the area and age of the characters.

If you ever want to do a deep dive into color and visual design this article about Game of Thrones costume choices is a great place to start. How characters are dressed matter even in books. Clothing and color tell a story.

How is editing going?

The editing letter is currently at 3,500 words and I haven't even started typing up the inline notes (I did handwritten because I was editing while I traveled).

Being a parent means being able to identify your kid in a group of a few hundred from the back of their head. Thankfully one of mine highlights herself with pink hair and usually my kids stay in a group. It makes them easier to find in tourist pics.

If you need an editor, I'm currently booked through mid-September but I'd love to read your book in October. You want to book Developmental and Line Edits 6+ months before the release date.

October is perfect for your Spring '25 release.
