Laying out an acceleration lane adjacent to a merge ramp on one of our projects and I asked my boss, how long he wants the lane to be. He gave me a traffic engineer measurement of 6 seconds at 60mph.

@Kurtroedeger
People get all irritated with me when they ask how far away something is and I say oh, about 3 hours, but then when an engineer does it it's fine. 😁

@janallmac That depends on the how far the actual thing is from you. Acceptable answers from shortest to longest are:

-just up the road
-only a few miles away
-less than an hour
-a bit more than an hour
-n-hours away

Time is an okay answer for distance away. Unless they specifically asked how many miles.
The engineer side is a time and a speed to be precise.
