We lost our rooster overnight. Nicest one we've had and also quietest. And the only chicken we've named (others become dinner, don't name your dinner). I expected to lose a bird or two with the polar vortex cold because some are getting old, but he went when the weather warmed up. Not sure what happened. No trauma on him.
Kiddo was a little sad since this was the first rooster that didn't try to attack him (which was why we kept him and not any of the other ones)

@Kurtroedeger 😢 My condolences.. That blows.

What was his name?

@jordicusmaximus his name was Punkaboo , which is a Pokemon or such that he had the same coloring as.

I'm not overly attached to any of the birds, but he was pretty nice and I feel bad for the kiddo.

His first question was, "so no more Chickie's now?!" Because we usually hatch a brood most years
We'll get another rooster sometime and hatch chicks again.

@Kurtroedeger aww, great name! Yeah, that is hard.. good chance for them to learn about the cycle of life though.

Ours is Chucky.. and he's loud as F! 😆 My neighbors likely curse my name multiple times a day.

@jordicusmaximus we've raised our own birds for eggs and eating for a bit, so he understands the cycle. Saddest was when the runt duckling the one year didn't make it. It got about halfway grown and just passed. That upset him because it was still like a baby. We had a special burial for that one.
Other than that he understands they're sometimes dinner.
Since this one was nice and a quiet one, we planned to keep him.

@Kitty62862 @jordicusmaximus don't ask me to spell Pokemon. 🙄 We play hangman and house rule now is no Pokemon names.

@jordicusmaximus @Kitty62862 here's a better picture of him with sunlight to make his colors pop. He was hatched in the spring of 2015.

@Kitty62862 4 is not super old, but not a spring chicken either. We've had birds live longer and some not as long.

Awww... hope your child will be alright. Anyone’s first realization of death is difficult 💜

@Kurtroedeger

😿

Sorry. I know how that goes - the named ones become pets.

I have 2 really NICE roosters right now, buff Orpingtons. Easy to handle boys - I can pick them up, pet them, carry them around, and they are happy. They are not mean to my hens. I don’t worry about them around the grandkids. If you lived anywhere near me, I would give one to you.

@Myrth we'll pick up some pullets this spring and usually someone drops a rooster off at the feed store. Thank you for the thoughtfulness.
