I've never gotten high on painkillers.
I know. I'm boring. But there's a reason..

I just read that codeine coughsyrup has become the drug of choice in some parts of Africa.

And I feel cheated. 😳 Took a swig to settle my throat for the night and nothing.

Some days, when it has been particularly rough, I have a small urge to get wasted. But alcohol does nothing, and even strong opioids just perk me up like the best cup of coffee.
Guess I'll have to laugh the edge off. 😂😂

@Fiikus_goddess

I react badly to codeine - as in out of body and floating hallucinations. 😱

I discovered this post-surgery in college, when given some to take for pain. I took one and went to calculus class. OMG. I was floating above the class! There was a small part of my brain, still sane, that said SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT HERE. I CANNOT FLY. I AM NOT FLYING! Walking back from class, I was 10 to 12 feet tall and my feet were waaaay down there.

I told my doctor to put NO CODEINE on my chart.

@Myrth @Fiikus_goddess I have an antibiotic on my chart with a big NO for giving me panic attacks. Never taken anything stronger than Tylenol or asprin. I tend to have the opposite of the most common side effects x2, so avoid taking any kind of meds if I can.
And what's really fun is I metabolize novacaine and lidocaine SUPER fast. So I've felt every cavity filling almost from the beginning and the one crown I have. I tell the dentist to not bother anymore.

@Kurtroedeger @Myrth I've had tons of teeth pulled out, when I felt everything. The last time I got my wisdom tooth out I demanded a specialist. She managed to numb me up with like elephant doses before and during the surgery. And she didn't even dislocate my jaw, like the last tooth pulling did. 45 mins of dislocation as wide as it got while they operated, and I felt everything.

And people wonder why I hate dentists.

@Kurtroedeger @Fiikus_goddess

Other than for one other surgery, where they gave me something IV while I was in the hospital, I typically try to avoid pain meds. I tend to have unfortunate side effects with most, and adult doses are usually too much for me.

Aspirin is a pretty ancient remedy, but it works fairly well for me and, taken with food and fluids, doesn’t tear up my stomach.

I guess I just wasn’t meant for psychoactive drugs. 🤷‍♀️

@Myrth @Kurtroedeger Aspirin is found in willowbark.
I'm immune to aspirin and ibuprofeine. Paracetamol works only on fevers, not pain. Muscle relaxers work in extra dosages injected into a muscle for about 2 hours..

My sister can take one ibuprofeine for a migraine and get all the help the entire day.
In hospital they forced me to eat 9,5grams (yes, 12x800mg) of ibuprofeine on top of 4 grams of paracetamol, 240mg of codeine and it did nothing for the nerve pain flair in my back.

@Fiikus_goddess @Kurtroedeger @Myrth

I've never found painkillers to help nerve pain.

Only gabapentin sorta helps. Anti-depressants help a bit with generalized fibro pain, which may or may not be nerve pain.

@tyghebright @Myrth @Kurtroedeger Gabapentin was a bust for me. I was on pregabalin (lyrica) for years, until the swelling got too bad.
Lyrica enchanced to painkillers, so for about 30 mins I was doing fine after 2 codeine pills. 2 hours after, not so much.

Currently I am taking duloxetine for the nervepain and an anti-convulsion medication to keep my spinal cord electric outbursts in check. Works better than the pregabalin.
