Musk wants to do here like he did in Brazil;

“ These days, in private conversations, Mr. Musk is obsessive, almost manic, about the stakes of the election and the need for Mr. Trump to win. He praises Mr. Trump’s courage under fire — he endorsed him on the night of the assassination attempt in Butler — and talks about how funny he is. ”

@Jorro i don't know if he's neuroatypical. but he def seems to fixate on things. like remember the buying of twitter. he obsessed. and then walked into it even tho i think he knew it was a bad idea.

he can be manic about all kinds of things. he's proven that.

maybe bipolar? and stops taking his meds sometimes?

there's something off, there.

@singlemaltgirl that is true , good point , he seems obsessively weird, when he was with Trump in the rally all that jumping and his actions were really strange, in his interviews the same , I agree with you, there is something off about him.

@Jorro

He wants to get his dumbass site shut down by the courts here?

How did "what Musk did in Brazil" work out for Bolsonaro? Why would I think he'd have better success here?

@mcfate he helped Bolsanaro and you see how bad turned out there , high poverty , inflation and the populist government, I haven’t paid attention lately and I don’t know if it improved under the new president, I would have to see but the right wing politics don’t work, we can see it here . And about someone here trying to shut down twitter, I don’t think it will ever happen, while it was down lots of Brazilian people moved to BlueSky, Portuguese might be the most spoken language there .

@Jorro

My only point is that Elmo tried to help Bolsonaro win against Lula, and Bolsonaro lost.

My more general point is that Formerly-Known-As has nothing particular to do with reality, and certainly exerts no significant IMPACT on it.

@mcfate the fact that all the misinformation spread in his platform does have an effect, last time I was there I could see that kind of posts and people they allowed in the platform, for example “ Haitians eating cats and dogs “ and all those kinds of things are very popular there , I know because I speak everyday with a Trump supporter, actually she believes that there is a machine to control the weather!!! I don’t know if he will succeed here but he will definitely have an impact.

@Jorro

Formerly-Known-As had nothing to do with that. Dickless and Flipper started that rolling.

@Jorro

Moby Dickless, the guy who's running for President, and his little sidekick, the one who called Dickless "America's Hitler" up until "Hitler" offered him a job.

@mcfate oh I see, yes , they started it but it is spreading thanks to twitter, mostly .

@Jorro

No, it's spreading because they started it. You can't connect Twitter to this story other than simply observing that people there slavishly repeat it.

The majority of Americans aren't on Formerly-Known-As at all. Nine out of ten of those who are, never use it.

Why would I, or anyone, believe it was spreading "thanks to Twitter" as opposed to some people incessantly in the news repeating it multiple times and its being widely reported on?

@mcfate “ mostly “ is a key word, it started with them ( Trump and JD Vance ) but you also have the bots on Twitter, the troll farms and obviously ( as you mentioned) people repeating it , but the reason Musk bought twitter was to put the finger on the scale, he who controls the narrative also controls the outcome.

@Jorro

I disagree with all of this. There's no basis for claiming Formerly-Known-As had a part in spreading it when every TV news show and newspaper was already reporting it.

As I said, only four out of a given 100 Americans are active Twitter users.

Musk bought Twitter because a judge in Delaware took his signing a contract as a joke seriously, in spite of his making valiant efforts to weasel out of it.

He bought it because he was MADE to buy it, ultimately.

@Jorro

No one makes a "plan" to lose billions of dollars and destroy his own reputation, while simultaneously driving off the main group purchasing the cars he makes on the side.

There's no interpretation of that which is rational.

@Jorro

No, it doesn't. That analysis is entirely contained WITHIN Twitter. It demonstrates no influence OUTSIDE of Twitter.

@mcfate wow !! You read a peer reviewed paper in under a minute!!! Amazing!!

@Jorro

Show me where it supports a claim that things that happen ON Twitter affect people who AREN'T on Twitter.

All this paper says is that IDs on Twitter may influence OTHER IDs on Twitter, and that's no the claim.

@mcfate my answer to that is in the response to your other comment.

@Jorro

No, it's not, and now you're verging on intellectual dishonesty.

Quote the part of the paper that proves me wrong, please. THAT'S what you need to do.

All this shows is that Twitter influences Twitter. You're claiming it influences REALITY.

@mcfate you are telling me you read 21 pages in less than a minute? Really?

@Jorro

I'm telling you that this paper doesn't support your claim. Show me wrong.

@Jorro

Are you telling me that the abstract misrepresents the paper by failing to mention what would be a pretty astonishing finding?

@mcfate look , I’m going to put myself as an example, I posted last night an article about the Tsavo lions , I found it on BlueSky , I’m in CoSo, I have two accounts in Mastodon , BlueSky, Tribel and Reddit , I post in all of them things that I find in one place , many of us are in more than one social media , I follow in other social media some of the members that post here , sometimes I find their posts there before I see them here , that is how information spreads .

@Jorro

No, that's just an ANECDOTE.

You dragged out this paper to prove me wrong. Now, quote the part that PROVES me wrong.

Remember: you don't need to show that Twitter influences one neither-random-nor-disinterested "extremely online" person, i.e. YOU.

You need to show that Twitter influences people who AREN'T online.

@mcfate again , look , my wife is not on social media, she hates it , she hates that I’m in social media , and I tell her every day what I see here , call it anecdotal but that is an example, she is not in social media and she knows about the 38 tornadoes, the guy who survived the Milton hurricane clinging to a cooler ( that one I also saw on BlueSky ), there it is , I just proved that people can know things when they are not in social media, and that happens all the time !!

@Jorro

Sigh.

ANOTHER anecdote.

One MORE time: you dragged out this "spear-reviewed paper".

If it DOESN'T support your claim, just ADMIT it. Don't tell me stories about you and your wife.

For every person in your family, I can produce SCORES if not HUNDREDS or THOUSANDS who heard about it on the news or in the paper.

@mcfate looks like you deleted your other response , it is in the introduction!!

@Jorro

No, I haven't deleted ANYTHING. Keep this up, and it'll be the oubliette for you.
