hrmmm... something called "VPN by Google" just installed on my pixel7...

time to play...

๐Ÿ”๐Ÿš‡๐Ÿ”

it's a simple VPN connection which isn't really configurable, it's basically on or off (there's a tile for it in the pull down shade)...not sure what protocol it's using (the connection is UDP/4500 encapsulated packets)

thoughts:

โ–ช๏ธit does appear to connect to a VPN node in my general vicinity
โ–ช๏ธit does NOT override your DNS...was able to use ControlD while on VPN
โ–ช๏ธspeed is decent...bout 20-25% reduction on speed test

it's ok, I guess...it is free tho ๐Ÿค”

that reads harsher than I intended...my VPN elitism came thru... ๐Ÿ˜ž

if you have pixel 7 or 8 and have said to yourself "really wish I had a VPN for use on dirty ass public WiFi connections, but I can't pay for one"...then this would be a pretty great thing to have...

free, decently fast VPN...what's not to like?

@opie
What's not to like is it's run by Google, who make it their business to track their users as much as possible.

I would use this if I needed to connect to some sketchy public Wi-Fi as you describe, but I would think twice about using it to obfuscate my traffic in situations where that's necessary.

@opie
Anyone looking for an excellent free VPN might consider ProtonVPN, from a company who puts user privacy first. I've been very impressed by it; performance is very good. The free version automatically connects you to the fastest server in either US, Japan, or Netherlands. You don't get to manually choose or to pick from other countries until you upgrade to a paid tier.

It is good. Iโ€™ve been in the Netherlands all week. Wish I really was.
