Now the word 'gai' in French means 'happy or merry' and it has, of course, disappeared as such in both English and French, to be replaced by the modern meaning of homosexual.
It would be quite interesting to know why and how the change occurred in today's society.
If anybody can throw light on this evolution of vocabulary, please let me know!

Haven’t you ever sang, “Don we now our gay apparel” at Christmas, or heard, “we’ll have a gay old time” in the Flintstone’s theme song.
Gay didn’t add its additional meaning until the 60s or 70s. I’m not sure who first applied the term to homosexuals.
@Jeber I got here in the US when I was 19 years young! So I missed the acculturation process that you mention and the use of gay in these songs!
But I thank you for that information which will help us narrow down when the change occurred!
