This election has me thinking …

First they came for the immigrants, and I did not speak out — because I was not an immigrant. But I should have.

Then they came for the non-whites, and I did not speak out — because I was not non-white. But I should have.

Then they came for the non-Christians, and I did not speak out — because I was not a non-Christian. But I should have.

Then they came for the LGBTQ+ folks, and I did not speak out — because I was not LGBTQ+. But I should have.

Then they came for the homeless and those using the social safety net, and I did not speak out — because I was not homeless nor was I using the social safety net. But I should have.

Then they came for the journalists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a journalist. But I should have.

Then they came for the remaining Democrats, and I did not speak out — because I was not a Democrat. But I should have.

2/

Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.

— with apologies to Martin Niemöller
