In my career as a Firefighter/Medic in Texas I was routinely passed over for promotion because I was liberal. This is actually legal.
The current Fire Chief of the department I retired from was much younger than me but managed to rise to the very top, because as near as I can tell he was conservative and went to the right church.
He also doesn't know the difference between the uses of 'their', 'there' and 'they're', but he's their (the all white old male conservative City Council) boy
