In this case, the movie was better than the book, in my opinion. The part with the baseball kid was hard to watch, though. I read that the actors struggled with the scene, especially Rebecca Ferguson (Rose The Hat). After they finally got through it, the kid jumped up laughing. 😂

Yes, I agree, this was better than the book. But, I believe Kathy Bates was a big part of the reason. Same with Misery. I actually read Misery while I was in the hospital. A nurse looked at the book and said "that might not be the best book to read while you're in the hospital".😂

The short story was really great.

My daughter went to see The Mist in the theater when it came out. She loved the short story so much that she spent some time writing a sequel to it - how she felt the story could continue from where it left off.

She came home in a towering rage with what had been done to the ending of the movie.

I saw it a few years later. She wasn't wrong. I'm low-key still mad about it.

Was the big scandal surrounding the flick that Darabont had two endings; he screened one and it didn't work with the audiences, then he shot another -- the ending with the, what? extra-dimensional creatures having been let loose by the military accidentally? 🤔 🤷‍♂️

The ending of the movie involved them running out of gas and all the adults in the car agreeing that it would be better to be shot dead, so the father kills everyone else in the car including his son. Has no bullet left for himself, just in time to see the mist lift and a military convoy go by with all the rescued people.

NOT how the story ended at all.

"Military accident" was the premise of the story as well as the movie.

I didn't realize there was an alternate version.

It could just be me; I remember reading something about it when it came out (I'd read the story in the '80s. I pretty much stopped reading King in the '80s. LOL) and then it seemed like I went back on the nettz to see what the kerfuffle was when Darabont went on to do "The Walking Dead." And I never watched the film because meh. 🤓

I enjoyed the short story. It had a potentially hopeful ending.

Nothing like the abomination for the movie ending.

Which is weird, because Stephen King cameoed in the movie and he only does that with scripts he's approved.

Early 80s I was still living at home and would never have been allowed to see a Stephen King movie. Back then the only movies I saw were ones my father wanted to watch. 😐

OMG you must see "Creepshow." The sequel ('87?) sucked and I have purged most memories of it from my noggin.

"Creepshow" was directed by George Romero and all the stories were by King. Bernie Wrightson did most still art. Arranged as a comic in short vignettes. And what a cast -- EG Marshall, Ed Harris, Viveca Lindfors, Adrienne Barbeau, Hal Holbrook, etc...

RE: The Walking Dead, I got about four? books into the graphic novel series - and just couldn't do it any more. Gratuitous over the top violence just doesn't do it for me. I never watched the show.

I sincerely doubt it. He's a sexual abuser (a fancy term for rapist imo), found to be so in a court of law, yet they still worship him. Why would they care about him doing what was done in the movie? I think he'd have to kill their own family members to wake them up, and even then I'm not so sure.
