@Museek My siblings and I saw it when our mother went into long-term care. She ended up in four different facilities, any of which should have been able to care for her during the entire course of her decline but all of which followed the same pattern:
They would open with a high staff/client ratio, good care, excellent food, accommodating management; then some corporation would buy the place, or remind the manager they were supposed to turn a profit, and everything would go bad.

Don't let your ballot be rejected. If you vote by mail, get it in the mail as soon as you can. If you have an alternative, like dropping it in a state-run ballot box or polling location, do that. Don't let DeJoy steal your vote:

The Rethuglicans have been running on "Stop Abortion Now" for 50 years, now they're all "jk, we love reproductive rights!"

@ToolPackinMama Try to solve hunger without giving people food? We do that too, for sure.

@BreakingNews I looked up "diplomatically" in the dictionary and "Biden said he doesn't know whether Israel is holding up a peace deal to influence the election" was there.
Yeah, I don't know either. I'm sure Bibi has enough problems, he would never try to manipulate the course of a war just to help a guy who eats out his hand get into the White House.
That would be as crazy as supporting Hamas in the Gaza elections in order to divide Palestine against itself. (Which I found under "blowback.")

@matuzalem The crazy thing is that in one breath people can deny something as well established and basically simple as human-created global warming, and in the next mouth bizarre conspiracy theories about human-created hurricanes.

@mcfate @GrazingintheGrass Building stuff to last costs money. Rebuilding costs money too. And when climate change means what you used to call a 1000-year storm is now a 100- or 10-year storm, you have to revise your budgets, and not in happy ways.

This particular daikon has struck with awe everyone who's seen it since it was dug from the earth.

Description: many-rooted purple daikon on a bed of carrots.

For decades I worked in the public sector and heard endlessly about "government inefficiency" and the "efficiency of the private sector." And I admit there was some featherbedding and what my dad called "G-jobbing" -- shop slang for logging excessive hours on a job for a client who wasn't likely to notice or object.
But then I got a job in the private sector. Good Lord, the inefficiency there was on a whole nother level. Who else could have come up with "planned obsolescence"?

@Lulz4l1f3 If they can control the weather why is Mar-a-Lago still standing?

PayPal is updating their Terms of Service to automatically give merchants access to your data starting in November and they've already opted you into it.

The EU has better privacy laws than North America, so if you're there you won't even have these settings.

OPT OUT BEFORE THEY START:

Go to Settings > Data & Privacy > PayPal Shopping and toggle it to off.

@NiveusLepus I feel you. Something in me is unalterably convinced that making a phone call will bring on the Apocalypse. I can even hear it now, saying "I'm not saying it'll bring on the Apocalypse, I'm just saying there's no reason to do it right now." Add my usual procrastination and distractibility and it's a wonder I ever call anyone.

@mcfate Are you kidding? By noon tomorrow he'll be taking credit for ending it.

@Cosmichomicide Coupsolini's "Freedom Cities" sound like cheesy 1950s sci-fi.
As for the vertical takeoff and landing vehicles -- that idea is so old that the people who developed the field aren't just retired, they're dead. That stuff was big news in the 1970s, and in fact the research made takeoffs and landings safer for all kinds of fixed wing aircraft. Good stuff, but about as futuristic as CB radio.

@Museek Of course I don't know, but I wouldn't bet on it. Around abortion, privileged American women have been saying one thing and doing another for decades, whether they're "pro-life" moms getting abortions for their daughters or "pro-choice" women persuading themselves that "leave it up to the states" is acceptable.
