@mcfate Heather Cox Richardson points out that last time a Democrat president declined to run for reelection--LBJ in spring of '68--the Democrat candidate lost.
TBF, a potential Democrat candidate was assassinated; and the country was so tired of war, anti-draft and -war demonstrations, inflation, race riots, and some Democrats so resentful of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, no Democrats could have won. So '68 =/= '24.
Still, there's no viable alternative.

@Maude I used to think that the chaos that would ensue if the Court reversed Obergefell -- hundreds of thousands of couples suddenly rendered unmarried or, best case, grandfathered in as anomalous relics -- would keep the Court from doing so.
Used to. This Court obviously doesn't fear chaos.

The debate's really a nothingburger, IMHO. There can't be that many people left who don't know what TFG is. David Sedaris's "chicken or shit" fable still applies.
I'm more saddened by the Supreme Court's trifecta of valentines to the privileged.

As for the fundamental reason for having the debate, to compare the two candidates, that ship sailed a long time ago. The problem with TFG isn't just his positions, though they're bad enough; it's that the record shows he's a lying narcissistic idiot, unfit for any office.

@LiberalLibrarian Yesterday the NYT offered an article comparing Biden’s and Drumpf's positions. That's like comparing the table manners of Leopold Bloom and Hannibal Lecter.
If Drumpf's platform was free healthcare, free housing, free food, total decarbonization, and a puppy for everyone, he'd still be unfit for office.
