You've heard this song in commercials before, you just likely never knew the name.
Building Steam with a Grain of Salt was one of DJ Shadow's early successes. He was a pioneer of using older records of mundane things and transforming them into a sonic wonderland.
You may not last the whole song, but you have jammed along to the first 2 minutes and didn't even know it.
Building Steam With a Grain of Salt - DJ Shadow - Entroducing (1994)
I will never get tired of recommending Louis Cole songs. Some of them are a bit too weird for normal tastes, but man are they always creative.
The live version of Thinking is part of his random videos in (supposedly) his mom's house. No matter what it's an incredibly fun watch, and a really groovy song.
I dare you to act like you aren't impressed when Ben Wendell's sax solo sets your computer on fire at 03:12.
Thinking - Louis Cole - Live Sesh (2018)
Welp, guess I am going on that eclectic playlist tonight anyways.
This right here, is an amaaaaazing version of an already wonderful song. There's something about the way Hope sings in this version that is hauntingly beautiful.
Depending on your mood, this one just might make you cry.
Fade Into You (Acoustic) - Mazzy Star - Live (1994)
I wanted to save this for my eclectic playlist when I do another music thread but it just seems like the right time now.
This is a cool lil video to watch, and the sound is just a real funky kinda guitar with chill vocals. This is a great song that just somehow never got it's due.
On The Rise - Eric Krasno - Blood From a Stone (2016)
Dunno why this song was in my head first thing this morning.
Makes me miss a good friend who I just lost touch with.
Either way, it's a good one, if not unconventional.
Hotel California (Ska Cover) - Ska Daddyz
Lean into it. Embrace some of those lines from Nikki's verse.
Show them what that monster do.
Let me get this straight wait I'm the rookie/
But my features and my shows ten times your pay?
Kanye West f. Rick Ross, Jay-Z, Nikki Minaj, and Bon Iver (Explicit lyrics warning) - Monster
Dedicated to all my small people and my pacifists out there.
If you've never heard this before uhhh there are a *couple* bad words.
😁
Pea - Red Hot Chili Peppers - One Hot Minute (1995)
Jamelia by Caribou is a soft haunting song. It's also my favorite on this list.
It's a song of remorse, and lead vocals convey raw, unfiltered emotion.
The R3volve remix takes that pain and adds a progressive beat to it to create something beautiful.
This is another song that with an amazing bassline.
4:15 - 7:05 is about as good as anything I've ever heard. I get goosebumps everytime.
Jamelia - Caribou (R3volve Remix) - Unreleased (2010)
On Her Majesty's Service is a song that was made for people who truly enjoy hearing a song in stereo.
Let's not even talk about how amazing the song is, and how it sound like the perfect unofficial James Bond song.
The mixing is perfect. The symbols so clean. And boy, I hope your subwoofer is ready for some work cause that bassline is a thing of beauty.
On Her Majesty's Service - Propellerheads - DecksAndDrumsAndRockAndRoll (1999)
I've posted this one before, but I pinned this music thread to my profile so, this needs to be in my 11 song crate dig.
Prince's cover of Radiohead's Creep is one of the best covers I've ever heard.
Period.
Listen to the legend already.
Creep - Prince (Radiohead cover) - Coachella 2008
Beach Dr. by Oddisee answers the question, "What if Herbie Hancock created beats for the Adult Swim Bumps?"
This is an incredibly smooth song with a second kinda hidden song at the end that also sounds like it could easily belong in the 70s.
Most of Oddisee's other songs are rap songs, but this is just a chill and underappreciated instrumental.
Don't sleep on this greatness.
Beach Dr. - Oddisee - Rock Creek Park (2012)
This is for you trippy CoSo folk Watch the video for this one.
Cirrus is just a light and airy song that makes it difficult not to tap your foot along with. And then the bass kicks in about halfway through to really push the song forward.
This song is an exercise in taking a simple melody and progressively adding elements to the song to create a chaotic, yet pleasing sound.
Cirrus - Bonobo - The North Borders (2013)
On the last rap song for tonight, Big K.R.I.T. fuses a gospel sound, with a real thought provoking message, and an extended outro to really explain his message.
What makes this song special is the juxtaposition of the gospel things, with the gritty delivery, and understanding that sometimes we just want lavish things to make life seem better, despite knowing that they are... just things.
Bury Me in Gold - Big K.R.I.T - 4 Eva is a Mighty Long Time (2017)
We go eclectic before I intended because I forgot that Shakey Dog uses a sample from another amazing song.
Love is Blue / I Can Sing a Rainbow is an utterly beautiful song. If you don't like the rap, this song might be more up your alley.
If you did listen to the Ghostface, hearing this after is gonna make you appreciate the work put in by Ghost and his production team to create Shakey Dog.
Love is Blue / I Can Sing a Rainbow - The Dells (1969)
There might be five rappers in the history of rap who can tell a story like Ghostface Killah.
I don't make the claim lightly. It's not much more for me to say about this one. There is this smooth 70s style beat that matches the heist flick vibe of the song perfectly.
You'll find no better example of how to use a rap song like a paintbrush to paint a vivid picture.
Shakey Dog - Ghostface Killah - Fishscale (2005)
Control is another song that never had an album release.
You *could* start from the beginning of Control, but you really want to just start around 2:55. Kendrick Lamar puts on a clinic on how to steal the spotlight.
Kendrick goes nuts for 3 minutes without a hook, cleverly throwing shade at Farrakhan & name dropping literally everyone.
This is the best Kendrick verse you might have missed.
Control - Big Sean f. Kendrick Lamar & Big Sean (2013)
Did you know that rap legend Andre3000 dropped an amazing verse last year?
You ever see someone so talented that they can seemingly warp reality in their area of expertise? That's Andre3000 in this song.
He has this weird stutter delivery that has emphasis on syllables that fall on the off beat. It shouldn't work, but the mix of the unresolved chords and off-putting sound eventually pays off.
Come Home - Anderson.Paak f. Andre3000 -Ventura (2019)
It's crate digging night for you guys tonight on #CoSoMusic.
I'm starting out with like 5 - 6 rap songs, and then I'm gonna go for the real eclectic stuff. I'll do my best to keep this threaded but no guarantees.
Hang on, and if you hear something you really like lemme know and I can send more recommendations your way.
Did you wake up this morning and say, "I really could use a song that has traditional Japanese instruments mixed with elements of funk and wrapped in a neat little 2 minute music video?"
Of course you did. I got you fam. This hidden gem might be the funkiest thing you hear all day.
Heritage - Masa Takumi - Heritage (2020)
^^^ The song to go with the long read.
Uptown Funk - Mark Ronson f. Bruno Mars (2015)
USMC Vet and dad. Sarcastic with a side of sweet and sour sauce.
