HiPOD: Crater-Delineating Mounds in Chryse Planitia

Similar HiRISE images of mounds around Chryse Planitia have revealed stunning and complex meter- and decameter-scale stratigraphy, indicative of widespread, regional-scale processes. This mound shares characteristics with those landforms, so is important to document.

HiPOD: Fossa in Orcus Patera

This public target from HiWish requested to investigate the relationship between the dark spots in the fossa and surrounding dark mantle deposits. Orcus Patera was first imaged by Mariner 4, and is a depression about 380 kilometers long and 140 kilometers wide. Its formation is unkown.

HiPOD: Impact Structure in Brain Terrain

We call the convoluted flow textures seen in the middle latitudes "brain terrain" because it resembles the cerebral cortex of human brains.

Here we see a relatively large (280-meter diameter) circular structure that is most likely a relaxed impact crater. Both the brain terrain and the relaxed crater are consistent with ice-rich ground.

HiPOD: Gullies in Acidalia Planitia

This crater is located in Acidalia Planitia. It is situated in a sparsely cratered area of elongated mounds and hosts a variety of gully forms on its eastern, northern, and western interior slopes. This observation is centered on the crater’s western slope and captures gullies with prominent alcoves, boulders, and outcrops.

HiPOD: Flowing Rivers on Ancient Mars

This image of ridges in Aeolis Planum tells a story of ancient rivers and a Mars very different to that of today. River beds often get filled with gravel and the surrounding terrain is often built up of fine-grained mud from river overflows. These ridges show the location of the old river beds in Mars' distant past.

HiPOD: Pitted Cones: Possible Methane Sources?

This observation shows relatively bright mounds scattered throughout darker and diverse surfaces in Chryse Planitia. These mounds are hundreds of meters in size. The largest of the mounds shows a central pit, similar to the collapsed craters found at the summit of some volcanoes on Earth. The origins of these pitted mounds or cratered cones are uncertain.
