HiPOD: Starfish & (No) Coffee

Our science goal with this observation is to assess winds from these seasonal fans in a lightly imaged longitude region informally dubbed “starfish”. The dark fans are the result of sublimation. The area also has a long monitoring history for these types of small-scale changes. (The title is a reference to a song. Can you guess the artist?)

HiPOD: Erosional Features on Olympus Mons

In Context Camera data, we see scour pits in the northern part of Olympus Mons. This cluster of erosional features is isolated from the main Medusae Fossae Formation (MFF) units. All other scour pits are found within the MFF, so high resolution imaging here could give us insight into what causes the scour pits to form and what the MFF is made out of.

HiPOD: A Pit near Arsia Mons

Also in Context Camera data, this image can help to determine if any underlying void (open fracture, dilational normal fault) and associated faults can be observed. Pits may reflect geologically recent tectonic or volcanic activity. Any associated caves could be targets for future robotic exploration.

HiPOD: Fans and Valleys

Thick beds with varying tone are exposed along the edge of the fan. Shallow valleys that carve into the smooth upland surfaces outside of the crater may provide clues regarding the formation of the deposits.

HiPOD: Dune Avalanche Slopes

These dunes have exhibited recurring slope lineae (RSL)-like streaks in a couple of previous images, but they do not seem to have been significant in 2013, when we obtained a full monitoring series. With this observation, we can keep monitoring to understand this activity, which may help test the RSL-granular flow model for the streaks.

HiPOD: Terrain in Hebes Chasma

Hebes Chasma is an isolated depression to the north of Valles Marineris, with no outflow channels. Some material on the walls of the chasma is different from the central mesa. We obtained this observation to investigate a possible landslide within the stratified sediments from one of the chasma’s walls.

HiPOD: A Clay-Rich Mound in an Eroded Plateau

These mounds contain bright-toned material which have been found to be clay-bearing with data from the CRISM instrument on MRO. This particular example contains both aluminum and iron/magnesium bearing clays. These regions of bright-toned material are layered down to the meter scale and are heavily fractured, reminiscent of the clay-bearing deposits at Mawrth Vallis.
