HiPOD 22 Mar 2023: Bedrock Ridges near Oxia Planum

The area surrounding one of the landing ellipses for ESA’s ExoMars rover in Oxia Planum is being investigated by geomorphologists to assess traversibility hazards. The area is also an example for the stratigraphy of the Oxia Planum and serves as a “Rosetta stone” for understanding the order in which the layers in the region are put down.

HiPOD 21 Mar 2023: Northern Plains Crater Modification

This appears to be a terraced crater among a cluster of smaller expanded craters. A high resolution image should provide some information about local ice and crater expansion. The terrace likely indicates the base of the ice in which expanded craters are growing. We also want to take a detailed look at boulders and polygons.

HiRISE 3D: Ribbed Terrain in Deuteronilus Mensae

The objective of this observation is to examine a small spot of ribbed terrain. It is where debris aprons from two mounds are meeting.

HiPOD 20 Mar 2023: Craters and Lava in Elysium Planitia

This large impact crater has an oddly sculpted and eroded margin, possibly due to the effects of the lava flow in this part of Elysium Planitia. The smaller crater to the south is younger and shows what fresh, unmodified craters look like in contrast.

HiPOD 17 Mar 2023: Of Layers in Luba Crater

Our science goal is to measure the orientations of layers in candidate lake deposits to test out a lake hypothesis. We want to see if the flat crater-bottom deposits are actually lake deposits as opposed to distal alluvial-fan deposits. Luba is about 35 kilometers in diameter and is named for a town in the Republic of Equatorial Guinea.

HiPOD 16 Mar 2023: Viscous in Moreux

We imaged this section of a central peak in Moreux Crater in 2007, so our goal with this observation is to study glacial change detection since that time. In particular, we are looking for crevasse, ridge, and boulder movement. Moreux has a complex geology, with a diameter of 138 kilometers.

This image shows an interesting stratigraphic relation where a “fluvial ridge” emerged from within or beneath yardang-forming material and crater ejecta. Regarding the ridge, our interest here is to examine details of sedimentary structure and to seek better understanding of the percentage of fluvial sediment vs. substrate vs. overburden.

This image offers excellent coverage of a complex dune field in Bunge Crater. Monitoring temporal changes of the dust devil tracks on the dune field can give us a better understanding of the mechanisms of their initiation and formation. The dunes are following the direction of the wind.

HiPOD 10 Mar 2023: Overtopped by Flow

This image shows that a flow (perhaps lava) over-topped the raised crater rim and poured into it at this location. If it was lava, high resolution can help us to see fine details in the shape of the flow so we can discern lava properties at the time of the emplacement. It might be challenging to decipher, but it’s worth a look.

This image, in far eastern Valles Marineris, was acquired a potential traverse route for a future Mars science helicopter, with its connecting crustal exposures and scarp-fronted deposit. HiRISE resolution can help characterize hazards, especially steep slopes to validate a traverse.
