HiRISE 3D: A Pit or Crater near Galaxias Chaos

Context Camera data shows a strange depression here: a broad depression with a flat floor and a central elliptical depression. Is this a bullseye crater? An unusual “expanded” crater? Pit crater?

HiPOD: Spectrally Distinct Materials in Tyrrhena Terra

HiWish strikes again! This public target reads: “We are studying the relationship between specific spectral signatures and morphology (shape) associated with impact craters. This particular location has CRISM mapping signatures indicating that a closer observation and analysis may be valuable for our study.” (CRISM is a spectrometer onboard MRO.)

HiClip: A Look at a Steep North Polar Scarp

This observation was an attempt to image in late northern winter, in spite of poor illumination. Narrated by Tre Gibbs.

HiRISE 3D: A Pit Crater on Pavonis Mons

This was spotted by the Context Camera, and is probably a relatively deep pit crater. Worth a closer look with higher sun angle.

HiPOD 7 Aug 23: Sand Dunes near Huygens Crater

This image footprint is located close to the eastern rim of the 467-kilometer diameter Huygens Crater, located in Sabaea Terra. The objective of this observation is to examine a field of sand dunes in an unusual location and that are parallel to each other. In Context Camera data, they appear very bright.

HiRISE 3D: In the Aeolis Region

This appears to be an inverted/eroded sedimentary fan with an associated ridge (inverted stream channel?).

HiPOD 4 Aug 23: A Landform in Ares Vallies

Another request from HiWish, this one to complete a stereo pair: “A HiRISE image is required to study tectonic deformation of Ares Vallis. A digital terrain model from a stereo pair can show the angle of fault plains. It is important to understand the degree of deformation to determine elevation changes across the region.”

HiClip: Glacial (Ice) or Lava Flow?

The geologic setting and latitude here suggest this is a glacial (ice-rich) flow, but the surface is broken into plates like many lava flows on Mars. (Narrated by Tre Gibbs.)

HiRISE 3D: An Impact with Secondary Craters

This anaglyph can help us to understand the nature of the formation of Vastitas Borealis (where this is located) and why small craters are generally extremely rare over this geological region.

HiPOD 3 Aug 23: A Streamlined Island in Aonia Terra

A public target request from HiWish: A close image of this island within a channel, which splits and broadens the channel to its south, might tell us more about the course of the flow through the region. HiRISE can look for erosion features on both the channel rim and the island.

HiClip: Boulder Patterns

The boulders are not distributed randomly or uniformly but are often arranged in linear or circular patterns. Narrated by Tre Gibbs.

HiRISE 3D: Tectonics in Hebes Chasma
The deformation pattern on the floor observed here will place strong constraints on the mechanisms that formed Hebes Chasma, tectonics and erosion.

HiRISE 3D: Utopia Region Knobs

There are several pancake-like knobs here but this one looks like it has a central summit crater. And is a little freaky, too.

HiPOD 1 August 2023: The Perseverance Landing Site in Jezero Crater

This image was requested in order to extend coverage of the Perseverance landing ellipse and enable red-green-blue colorization of the Jezero Crater landing site map. These post-landing images from HiRISE can help assess traverse routes and aid in science planning, in addition to filling gaps in coverage from earlier observations.

HiRISE 3D: Lineated Valley Floor Material

The formation of this terrain likely is a result of glacial processes. This scene is located north of the Arabia region of Mars.

HiPOD: Along the Edges of Mesas

Also visible in Context Camera images, the objective of this observation is to examine the exposures of layers on the edges of several mesas in the same field of view. The scene is located in western Arabia Terra, a large upland region in the north of Mars thought to be some of oldest terrain on the Red Planet.

HiRISE 10K: Sand Dunes and Ripples in Proctor Crater

The larger, darker bedforms are dunes composed of sand, most likely of fine size. Ripples tend to move slower than dunes. Because of this, over time,

HiPOD 28 Jul 23: Bright Linear Dunes West of Meroe Patera

These fascinating linear dunes at Meroe Patera were also identified in Context Camera images, which have developed in a sand starved region of the dune field, elongating from behind a scarp. This is a re-image of an earlier observation we acquired in 2020 to compare changes in shape compared to other linear dunes elsewhere on Mars.
