Meridiani Planum presents evidence of both ancient and modern active windblown bedforms. Assessing the activity of the active dark dunes in this area will be crucial for understanding the rate of Martian landscape evolution. Monitoring the activity of the dunes in this region will help to better characterize the landing environment from a geological and atmospheric point of view.

HiPOD 25 Jul 23: Of RSL and ILD
Previous images of this area shows what appear to be recurring slope lineae (RSL) behavior coming from an interior layered deposit (ILD) on the north face. One image showed RSL, a follow-up indicated the RSL was not as lengthy, and another showed it as being subsequently longer. More images that show incremental changes are needed to confirm this as RSL. Additionally, these interior layered deposits might be composed of sulfate.
HiRISE 3D: Layered Materials on the Floor of Ritchey Crater
This has been one of the potential landing sites for the Mars Science Laboratory (now in Gale Crater), and high resolution was requested to assess the safety and evaluate the slopes.

HiPOD 24 Jul 23: Where the Wind Blows
With this observation, we look at changes since 2010 and with other subsequent images that we have acquired of this area. Bidirectional wind regimes were detected here, so tighter imaging will help understand when east- or west-blowing winds dominate. Dunes are particularly suited to comprehensive planetary studies because they are abundant over a wide range of elevations and terrain types.

Unlike on Earth, there are lots of craters on this lava plain, and you might notice that some of the craters have dark interiors and a spray of darker material around them, but most don't. This difference is telling you something about the difference in age of these craters.

HiPOD 20 Jul 23: Channel within a Valley in Northern Arabia Terra
The valley containing this channel measures 1.5 km across, while the channel itself spans just 200 m. Several rock layers are visible along the channel walls, and dunes fill the channel floor. The channel cuts back and forth across the valley floor, which suggests surface water was present in the valley over long time periods.

Recently formed slope streaks are typically darker than their surroundings and appear to fade (i.e., brighten) over time.

HiPOD 19 Jul 23: Pitted Mounds in Acidalia Planitia
This image in the Acidalia Planitia region of Mars shows numerous round hills that have a large circular depression on their tops. These pitted mounds may be ancient mud volcanoes that formed when liquid mud erupted from underground due to shaking from a nearby Marsquake.
HiRISE is a high resolution camera onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (NASA). We take images of the surface of Mars. Based out of UArizona in Tucson.
