With HiRISE images like this one we can look at this cliff face and see it is broken up into jagged blocks. Debris piles at the base of the cliff show where these blocks have fallen out.

HiPOD 2 May 2023: Complicated Lava Cooling

In this lava, a crust of rubble forms as the lava partially cools but then tears up its own cover. Eventually, the rubble can form plates that can be rafted apart as the lava cools further, producing textures like those visible on terrestrial lava lakes that have cooled.

Toconao Crater has some of the best preserved distal ramparts of any crater on ridged plains materials. This is one of several images that will enable us to more fully study the morphology of these ramparts, thereby building our knowledge of the ejecta emplacement process.

HiPOD 1 May 2023: Glacier-like Features on Mars

Glacier-like features like this indicate that ice accumulated here in the past, which does not happen in today’s climate. It’s somewhat of a mystery why these features have flowed so much when they are so thin, the ice is so cold, and Martian gravity is so low.

HiPOD 28 Apr 2023: A Circular Mesa on the Red Planet

Can we see layering in the scarps of this mesa? The larger circle here formed as a scarp retreated away from a previous crater’s raised rim. The terrain has a lot of variety and elements, including dark, spotty surfaces (big boulders?). Was this below sea level in some hypothetical northern plains-covering ocean? Is there any evidence for sediment in that ocean basin here?

The region of interest contains megabreccia that may be a breccia dike. It is important to determine this in order to understand the impact dynamics that created the Isidis basin and the megabreccia blocks exposed in the northeast Syrtis region. This image was requested for a stereo pair to provide 3D context to learn about the exact nature of this megabreccia exposure.

This image covers a flow-like feature that is hypothesized to be the result of subsurface sediment mobilization. With it, we can investigate details about the associated mud movement over the Martian surface. The flow is showing an interesting shape that might be evidence of the former presence of an icy-muddy crust.

At the southeastern edge of a huge impact crater, Context Camera data show a candidate delta formation, which is interesting because other CTX observations and an earlier HiRISE picture show channels and light-toned fans feeding a playa deposit at a lower elevation. Could there have been two different lake levels within this crater?

Eventually, time is a drag on everything. Context Camera data show that this impact crater is fresh enough to still have bright rays and ejecta, yet is heavily and strangely modified. In addition to examining the rays in detail, we also want to take a look at any boulders and polygons.

HiPOD 21 Apr 2023: Possible Sulfate-Rich Terrain

One interpretation of this area is that Valles Marineris sulfate layers once filled the canyons. Another proposes that sulfate deposits grew as domes. A prediction is that layer orientations should be aligned with, though gentler than, modern surface slopes.
