HiPOD 14 Sept 23: Monitoring Slopes in Gale Crater
The location of this observation is directly east of where the Curiosity rover is currently exploring. In this part of Gale Crater, there are some steep slopes with lineations we saw in previous images, so this is part of a series of observations to monitor occasionally to look for changes.

HiPOD 13 Sept 23: Crater and Lava Fill in Elysium Planitia
This crater appears to have been mostly filled with lava, but there is no vent apparent within the crater: could it be invasive lava? In the eastern part there are many rafted-looking blocks that may have eroded off the crater wall. They don’t have the texture of (geologically) fresh lava. Many of them appear surrounded by moats, suggesting that the lava crust was strong enough to partially support them.

This image shows the head of an Abalos Undae dune field revealing possible sand source near base of Planum Boreum. This is in the north polar region of Mars.

HiPOD 12 Sept 23: Ringed Ridges in Kasei Valles
The objective of this observation is to determine the nature of ridges arranged in concentric rings. According to the requestor for this image: “I have studied many hundreds of Context Camera images and I do not think I’ve seen anything quite like this. I like to suggest images for things that are rare: this is one of them.”

HiPOD 11 Sept 23: Hills in Coprates Chasma
In this image, we see two well developed cones, most likely the Martian equivalents of cinder cones, which are part of wider volcanic field in Valles Marineris. A stereo image might provide insight about their shape and size. Observations like this might provide hints about explosive conditions at the time of eruption and also why explosive volcanism occurred in this area.

HiPOD 8 Sept 23: Learning the Flow
A flow pattern along the eastern side of Aram Chaos is visible at lower elevations and is affecting the rims of multiple small impact craters. The flow of material over the rims of these craters can give insight into when this movement of material took place, and what types of material are being deposited from higher to lower regions.

HiPOD 7 Sept 23: Gully Stratigraphy with Glacial Deposits
This public target request via HiWish requested we acquire this image in order to obtain slope measurements and shapes of the gullies on this crater’s wall at the meter scale. Another good way to request for an image from HiRISE is the fact that we have no stereo coverage of this area. This can make for a compelling target.

Context Camera data shows a dense network of ridges and alcoves at this location. Our main science goal is to figure out what exactly is moving sediment down hillslopes in landscapes like this, but only if high resolution topography is available, which HiRISE can provide. (The technical rationale was to study hillslope-channel coupling in a high drainage density region.)

HiPOD 5 Sept 23: Impact-Related Deposits and Flows near Jijiga Crater
The rationale for acquiring this image is to observe how surface flow patterns in the area vary with distance from the proposed parent crater. This is one of several flow feature observations being suggested in the vicinity of the well-preserved Jijiga Crater to the southwest. The crater is named after the town in Ethiopia.

HiPOD 4 Sept 23: Resistant Material in Olympus Mons Aureole Ridges
The question of how the Olympus Mons aureole formed has wide-ranging implications for Mars paleoclimate, including whether a northern ocean existed. The presence or absence of bedded lava within aureole blocks can help test the merits of a competing hypotheses for the aureole’s formation. These blocks are particularly well exposed and appear to contain layered beds of resistant material.
HiRISE is a high resolution camera onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (NASA). We take images of the surface of Mars. Based out of UArizona in Tucson.
