HiPOD 14 Sept 22: Light-Toned Landforms near the Edge of Hesperia Planum

Also visible in a Context Camera image, this observation can address a decades-old concern as to whether Hesperia Planum is entirely lavas or includes sedimentary rocks in the plains-forming stratigraphic package. The landform is notable for its moderate number of impact craters and abundant wrinkle ridges. The word “Hesperia” is a Greco-Latin poetic term for “lands to the west.”

HiRISE 3D: Spiders in Interesting Terrain

But isn't all the terrain on Mars interesting? Our goal for this observation is to measure any changes from previous images.

HiPOD 13 Sept 22: Marvelous Mojave

Mojave Crater has long been a favorite to image with its gorgeous sedimentary and possibly fluvial fans. There is evidence in and surrounding the crater that rain may have fallen here in Mars’ past. Rain is considered to have been exceedingly rare in Martian history, though a local rain event could have been caused by the heat of the impact that formed Mojave Crater. Our goal is to monitor for any changes.

HiRISE 3D: A Sinuous Ridge

Does this extra-crater ridge have a fluvial origin? Identifying these types of fluvial ridges outside of craters is key for reconstructing ancient sedimentary basins, and channel deposits in basins are one of the key deposits used to constrain ancient climate, water discharge, and base-level changes.

HiPOD 12 Sept 22: A Deflated Rampart Crater in Hephaestus Fossae

A rampart crater is a specific kind of impact crater that displays an ejecta with a low ridge along its edge. This is referred to as “fluidized ejecta,” and is found mainly on Mars. The diameter of the crater can be used to infer the excavation depth, while new craters on the ejecta can reveal the age of the larger impact.

HiPOD 10 Sept 22: Down in the Paleochannels

Transverse aeolian ridges—or TAR—are mysterious, wind-blown features that are intermediate in size between ripples and much larger sand dunes.

HiRISE 3D: Fossae East of Arsia Mons

Our goal is to examine a vent-like structure in the floor of a graben that is part of a larger fossae system partially buried by numerous flows.

HiPOD 9 Sept 22: A Flow Feature near Huo Hsing Vallis

This image shows a potential outflow channel near Huo Hsing Vallis heading into an old crater. It appears that this crater was filled in, and a higher resolution picture can constrain the timing of potential fluvial activity and lava emplacement. The lava appears to overlay sand and sedimentary deposits. Dunes are also visible in this channel, which could be compared to similar features in Huo Hsing Vallis.

HiPOD 8 Sept 22: Mounds and Ridges in Oxia Colles

This landform shows distinctive layering in Context Camera images, and is similar to other buttes to the far northeast that have been observed to have stratigraphy like there is in Mawrth Vallis. Understanding the connection between these landforms is vital to our knowledge of their formation. The ridge is to the immediate north of the mound.

HiRISE 3D: A Channel in Newton Crater

Subglacial channels on Earth may flow uphill. Is the slope profile of these these channels in Newton consistent with subglacial channels?

HiPOD 7 Sept 22: A Good Place for a Copter!

The prominent feature in this observation might either be an ancient fan, or perhaps the result of more recent recurring slope lineae. It could also be a potential future exploration site for a Mars Science Helicopter! With stereo, we can determine if the fan formed from debris flows vs fluvial processes, in addition to looking for hazards like boulders for a future Mars helicopter.

HiPOD 6 Sept 22: A Layered Crater Deposit in Tempe Fossae

Tempe Fossae are a group of troughs about 2,000 kilometers long in the Northern Hemisphere of Mars. This observation gives us a look at an impact crater with a sharp rim and large, layered deposits on its floor. Some of the ejecta of the crater even extends into some of the nearby troughs. These troughs are also known as “graben.”

HiPOD 2 Sept 22: Chloride in East Thaumasia Planum

The chloride detected here occurs within a trough that intersects a wrinkle ridge and crater within the target area, which should be helpful for understanding stratigraphy of the terrain. Are there any other compositions exposed? Chloride salt deposits on Mars are intriguing because they dissolve very readily and thus record the last stage of liquid water present on the surface of Mars.
