HiPOD 14 Apr 2022: The Beauty of Inverted Channels

This observation was public suggestion from HiWish: to image an area within an eroded impact crater that shows very clear layers and inverted channels exposed in the distal ends of two alluvial fans. Inverted channels are made from deposits that wind up being more resistant to erosion than the surrounding terrain and so remain higher-standing.

HiRISE 8K: The Terrain of Melas Chasma

While there was not much by way of a science rationale for this observation beyond wanting coverage, Melas Chasma is the widest segment of the Valles Marineris canyon system. In this image, we can see wind-swept material in the form of thin ridges.

HiRISE 3D: A Network of Sinuous Ridges in Aeolis Dorsa

This channel network is perpendicular to networks just to the north. Is this a distributary network (flow to the west) or contributory network (flow to the east)?

HiPOD 13 Apr 2022: Slope Features of an Impact Crater

Recurring slope lineae are Martian seasonal features characterized by a low brightness (albedo) during local spring/summer that fade during winter/late summer. Their daily characterization through a coordinated observation with HiRISE and the CaSSIS instrument on the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter provides additional insights into their nature and formation mechanisms.

HiRISE 4K: The Central Peak of Large Impact Crater

Central peaks often reveal interesting minerals, so our primary goal with this observation is to examine bedrock minerals. This particular image shows lots of detail of the peak, which was created by rebounded material after the original impact.

HiRISE 3D: Possible Layering on a Crater Floor in Protonilus Mensae

Fine layering is suggested in larger Context Camera images, so HiRISE is here to get a high resolution look.

HiPOD 12 Apr 2022: A Layered Crater Rim near Mawrth Vallis

This crater rim shows some layering in Context Camera images that is markedly similar to other landforms around the area. These other landforms have been observed to have Mawrth-like stratigraphy. Understanding the connection between these landforms is vital to our knowledge of their formation.

HiPOD 11 Apr 2022: Layering and Cross-Cutting Bands

This mound exhibits layering and cross-cutting bands that correspond to an iron/magnesium phyllosilicate composition elsewhere in mounds in Chryse Planitia. This particular mesa has a large surface area and excellent exposure, which is ideal for observations of stratigraphic relationships.

HiPOD 6 Apr 2022: Irregular Circular Depressions around Naar Crater

Our objective is to analyze a new unknown feature dubbed “irregular circular depressions.” The features are located directly on the outer rim of the crater. This image is of geologic interest since their origin is unknown: could they be related to impact cratering or perhaps due to the presence of ice?

HiRISE 3D: Ejecta Flow over and around Pre-Existing Obstacles

The crater outside this image has a very prominent lobate ejecta blanket, so we have a good view of the flow as moved between numerous pre-existing obstacles.

HiPOD 7 Apr 2022: Boulders near Hale Crater

The objective of this observation is to determine what formed piles of boulders near Hale Crater. There may be some interesting process that sorted these large boulders in these particular spots. The scene is also visible in a Context Camera image. Our scene is at full resolution.

HiRISE 8K: Volcanism in Valles Marineris

This image shows cones with summit pits that are very similar to cinder cones on Earth. They are also very well-preserved, peppered by only small impact craters, so they must be geologically young (perhaps less than a few hundred million years).

HiPOD 5 Apr 2022: Layers in Northwest Arabia Terra

The objective of this observation is to examine fine layers exposed on around buttes. Some parts of Arabia Terra contain a series of layers. The layers of this image can be compared to other outcrops of layered terrain. While barely visible in a Context Camera image, HiRISE will be able to show the layers in spectacular fashion.

HiPOD 4 Apr 2022: On a Crater Wall

The objective of this observation is to examine a channel network on the eroded wall of a crater located to the southwest of Bamberg Crater. Several channel branches are also visible in Context Camera image, so our picture may show many more.

HiPOD 1 April 2022: On the Beauty of a Gullied Crater

This observation is a good example of when different spacecraft work together. The CaSSIS camera onboard the European Space Agency’s ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter and HiRISE coordinated observations to observe the same recurring slope lineae in this gullied crater at different times of the day, allowing us to investigate any daily activity.

HiRISE 10K: A Channel in the Cerberus Palus Region

This image shows the end of a small channel near Athabasca Valles on Mars. Athabasca is an example of a Martian “outflow channel,” likely carved by a massive flood of groundwater. (See link for full cutout and additional information.)
