@Haruspex USians are SO WEIRD about kids & alcohol. i grew up in the 50s/60s, when cocktails before dinner was a thing. by 5 i could mix a mean Manhattan, my dad's favorite.
we were never denied sips of anything the grownups were drinking. we were allowed wine with dinner if we chose (pro tip: don't choose both wine & milk)
while my younger brother did get tipsy drunk on champagne once when he was 6, none of us grew up excessive drinkers, & none of us got pass out drunk in a field ever.
