For me, it was pre-teen. I'd guess maybe I was 8 or 9. Maybe? And we didn't go out to get them. Mom made them. We went out to eat so rarely. Those days, it was a once or twice a year thing.
The HuzBob said he was a kid. Once he discovered what money was (he'd been a paperboy), he'd rather have a milkshake.
Another failing of mine as a parent: I never got my kids a rootbeer float.
