It’s near impossible for me to pick a favorite SRV tune. There are so many. When I first heard Stevie I was already past my concert-going years. It felt an instant connection with the dude. He was only a year older than I, playing & singing these blues/rock songs that just resonated. I finally got to see Stevie in concert just 2 years before his sudden death. It was at Red Rocks Amphitheater right here in Colorado.

Stevie’s transition from a shy wannabe guitar star to a premiere Texas Blues frontman took a while. He didn’t take the conceptual path of his big brother Jimmie. Jimmie was good, but his style failed to hold the interest of the Austin crowd. I myself like Jimmie and his work with The Fabulous Thunderbirds. But he didn’t have the knack for blues like Stevie. Though they would both rise to prominence at the same time, Stevie stormed past Jimmie quickly.

National exposure evaded Stevie until he finally formed his own band Double Trouble in the very late ‘70s. I wouldn’t hear of him for another half decade, me being busy with a new family. Soon they would be popping out album after album chock full of fabulous originals & covers that took Texas Blues to another level. In The Beginning was not his first album. He didn’t get a record deal until after the Montreux festival. It signaled his arrival on the American blues scene.

Let me wrap this up, have to go make breakfast for me & my lady.

It’s rare for me to name an artist who never made a song I didn’t like. Though I’ve had all his albums for years, the internet & YouTube has brought all those ‘previously unknown to me’ versions of his craft right into my home. I never get tired of listening to or singing the hits of this virtuoso of blues.
Here’s one of my favorites.

@DocLaing I can't pick a SRV favorite either. I even wrote a book about one girl's love for his work.

@DocLaing It's available pretty much everywhere in ebook/audio/print. If you can't find it in a bookstore, they can order a copy for you.

@DocLaing A bass player friend of mine introduced me to SRV in '85, I think. (thanks, Andy--wherever you are!) He ran Stevie for Junior class president at my high school. No joke, lol. He had a VHS recording of the first Austin City Limits performance. It's not an exaggeration to say it changed my life.
