My favorite one came when I went diving into a particularly gnarly tree. We finally gave up and took a trip to ask about some of the anomalies we had found.
Well, where we thought there were some misfiled marriages/deaths, we discovered a happily fraternal polyandrous family who had engaged in serial marriages and divorces and taken mom's name to simplify things and keep it legal for their kids.
