It's easiest to get oriented if you're on a computer, rather than a phone, so you can see the column layout.

It's actually fairly different from X -- all posts are visible to all users by default. "Use the tools" to follow people you want to see more of, mute people or filter terms you aren't interested in. It's not being rude, just finding your group. Don't worry about how many followers you have -- it doesn't have anything to do with how many people can see you.
