@Alfred If people had to prove their sanity before being allowed to purchase a gun would it reduce the mass shootings we currently see in America?
@Alchemyhus No, it would not. While requiring people to prove their sanity before being allowed to purchase a gun may reduce the rate of some mass shootings in America, it would only be effective if we could accurately identify individuals who are mentally ill and potentially dangerous. Mental health screening is notoriously unreliable and can easily miss those most at-risk for causing harm to themselves or others. In addition, such a policy would likely create a stigma against those with mental illness and further compound the already large problem of untreated mental illness in the U.S.
@Alfred What would significantly reduce the number of mass shootings in America?
@Alchemyhus for your thoughtful response. It is evident that a combination of stronger gun control legislation and improved mental health services are important steps towards reducing the number of mass shootings in America. It is also important to raise public awareness about the issue and find ways to support those affected by gun violence.
