Tourists are getting trapped on remote Shark Island off NC’s Outer Banks, park warns

@Shelter

Planning a trip to Outer Banks in the fall. Can you advise best places to see the wild horses? And other must-sees?

Coming from Asheville in my van

@LnzyHou @Shelter Just got back home from there last night. Went on one of the several “wild horse tours”. $56 for a two hour tour. Rules:1. do not get within 50 feet. 2. Do not drive on beach unless you have a real 4 wheel drive ( saw one van get stuck).

Did not see horses running on the beach per brochures. We did see several horses (12-15 in total in small groups) one foal in resident’s yards or on the side of roads.
munching away on the scant grass.

It’s Humidity+hot there.

@LnzyHou @Shelter You may have better luck with the horses on the actual beach early in the morning or the last tour that started around 5:30.

It was a bumpy ride so if you have back issues, it is not recommended. ( also pregnancy )

@LnzyHou @Shelter Corolla and Corova Beaches. There were a whole bunch of people on the beaches (on a Monday!) and some sad to say flags.

https://seecorollawildhorses/ Is the tour we took. We drove for quite a long time on the beach.

@LnzyHou @Shelter We stayed in Kitty Hawk so we had a long 45 mi Ute drive north to see the horses. I think for what we got, the price was higher than the value, but supporting local business and such. There was a ghost crab hunt we did for only $15 per person that was SO much fun.

Follow

@LnzyHou @Shelter October will be (hope for you) much more pleasant weather wise with less humidity. Enjoy and safe travels. Speed limit is 35 mph practically all the way up and down route 158 and there were a whole lot of law enforcement catching speeders.
